40mm Filters for Canon LTM Lenses

I much prefer to keep a skylight or UV filter over my lenses to provide some mechanical protection to the front element (I have heard the arguments for not doing so and remain quite unimpressed). The Canon 50mm f1.8 lenses present a bit of a challenge as the 40mm filters (not 40.5mm) which they require are difficult to find.

I just bought a couple of 40mm UVscrew in filters on eBay from a fellow in Hong Kong who does business on eBay as "buybuyeasy". The two I needed came to about US$15 total with shipping.

The filters arrived today and I'm pleased with them. They're brand new glass filters in aluminum mounts; these screwed right onto my chrome f1.8 Serenars without problems. The manufacturer was Marumi in Japan, a maker I'm not familiar with but as the packaging was labelled in English and French as well as Japanese, Marumi evidently sells outside the Far East.

This seller was mentioned although he seems to have stopped listing 40's. A question for you. Does it look as though you can remove the glass easily? If so what size is it. If you look at the other threads, you will see the reason why.

Marumi is quite a well known budget filter maker. Fortunately, I have just managed to aquire some B+W 34mm and 40mm filters at about $10-$12 each will will be enough for me at the moment.

wow!
that's about 12.30 american plus shipping of course.

i now have 3 pristine uv filters and a pristine set of red, orange, yellow, yellow green, green 40mm filters.
i have some others but they are not so pristine.

and then there is that 85b (i think) that is now in many pieces after i tried to lift out that damn little retaining ring.

I also picked up 40mm filters from "buybuyeasy". The glass is held in my retaining rings, and the mounts are metal. The outer diameter of the filters are slightly more than the Canon lenses, so the push on caps fit a little tighter. Not too much though: it is af if they adapted 40.5mm rings to 40.

A quick update. I placed the order at about 3 yesterday afternoon. It arrived this morning at 9! Although they are on the second hand list , the filters are fuly boxed and look as though they have never been opened. I will be looking at the list again to see if there any in other fittings I need and will probably place an order on Monday. If anyone is interested, I can contact them and see how many they have got. The UK postage is about £6 and I could share this pro rata for any orders plus the cost of airmail to send them on.

I can reccommend Ffordes. Great choice at fair pricing.
With a little luck I have some older 40mm fiters coming my way to try to adapt them for my 25mm. If the thread fits I will cut out pieces of the ring to avoid vignetting.

At least that's the idea...

Hansa in Japan makes new coated filters in 40mm and other "old" sizes. They make them in both silver and black. Very nice. If I remember correctly, they cost about US$25 - US$30 if I am not wrong. Will be back in Tokyo in late February so would be happy to help out any RFFers if required. Another way is to look for a RFFer that is based in Japan.

New B&W filters can be had from B&H or Adorama. They are special order items and each of the two shops carries a slightly different selection.
They ar ~$30 each.
