40mm nokton with R4?

Hi guys, i'm new to this forum so be gentle 🙂

I've been using an ultron 28mm with the R4 and it's great. thinking of adding a normal lens to my lineup though, and wondering what's the best option.

i'm thinking of the 40mm nokton or a 50mm, though i suspect i won't be able to focus it accurately below f2.

has anyone used the nokton on the R4? does that make any sense at all, and would i be using the 35 framelines or the 50 ones?

i prefer wides, so 50mm would be the longest i'd go. don't think i want to carry another camera around so hoping this can be done on the R4

I think you should be able to use the 35mm framelines with a 40, but may I ask, why not a 35? I have noticed no problems focusing my 35 Ultron with the R4a.

i think 35 would be a little too close to 28. 40 closer to ideal.

i use my 40 with my r4a with no problems. you'll find the 35 framelines are a great frame of reference. you shouldn't have too many problems focusing below f/2, except where it's dim and you can't see the patch too well.

could i ask, why do you prefer the 35 lines over the 50mm ones? isn't there a risk of losing something in the edges if i frame too tightly?

the 50 framelines are too small (and painful to work with) the 40 is pretty close to the 35. as long as you mentally don't go all the way to the framelines, you should be prettty good.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how is the 28mm Ultron? Is it too big? Do you find that it scares people on the street?

I'm planning on buying an R4M this summer along with a lens. My most-used focal length is 28mm and I normally shoot on the streets so I'm wondering if this would be a good option.

I think the Ultron has a 46mm filter size right? I have a 28mm M-Hexanon with the same filter size and it works on the front of an R4A. You can see it in the VF of course but it is not an issue. RF lenses are comparatively small - they don't scare people. 🙂

Hmm. Interesting. How long is your Hexanon? The Ultron is 2 1/2 inches long which is longer than my Canon FD 28mm f/2.8. I'm really more worried about length than width. Thanks for your response.

Yes that's a bit long but it is f1.9 right? The M-Hexanon is an f2.8 lens and is a smidgin over 1 & 1/2 inches long flange to front barrel end. With a B+W MRC UV filter & heavystar 46mm lens hood on it is 2 & 1/4 inches long from the flange to the front edge of the lens hood.

depends on what you compare it to i guess? the ultron is a fair bit larger than those little pancakes. i wish it were smaller too...

but so far, no i haven't scared anyone on the streets yet 🙂 people seem to ignore me even when i'm less than 2m away.

i'm coming from an slr with a zoom lens almost twice the width and diameter of the ultron, so it still feels relatively discreet.

In progress with my second roll on the R4A. First with my new Nok 40. HP5 at 800iso -hope to process this weekend if I get time off... I use the 35mm lines. In one corner you can see the Nok but it is only intruding into the 21mm lines, not as far as the 35mm lines.
