This interesting approach came up in a recent thread, which mentioned trying for the "Daido Moriyama look".

Issues of technique/appropriation aside, I'm curious to try this...if for no other reason than to play a bit of jazz instead of classical music, when it comes to an approach to images.

Anyway, I tried some 400 film, uprated to about 5000 (what the poster mentioned) and tried it in Rodinal 1:50...terrible. Negs thinner than an aspiring model and totally unusable.

Has anyone given this a whirl, or have any advice on this? I'm curious about a harsher, grainier look - if only for the sake of trying it.
Thinking of shooting at EI 800 and maybe 1:25...but sticking with the hot hot developer and short time.
