5-4 win on penalty shots, Go Finland!

I don't think the World Championships are being televised here in the US. Yes the NHL Playoffs are being played right now, but the TV ratings for it are very low. It is too bad, the level of play has been great, to the level that makes hockey such an exciting game.

Congrats, but penalty shots as a tie breaker are a European *******ization of the game. Like soccer, it not only encourages weaker teams to play for a tie, but more importantly trivializes all the effort put forth by the players and decides hard fought battles with a little skill contest.
Hockey is play until you drop.

We dropped out yesterday against Sweden... but the referee wasn't fair...

and we got a goal just after our goalie was attacked like this:

unfortuanely the referee is "the god" and players can't do anything about it... 🙁

Actually you can watch the games over the internet for a charge. There are details over at www.usahockey.com.

Let me echo the thought that shootouts s*ck.

There is nothing like overtime hockey late in the NHL playoffs. That is when men play like boys again loving and fighting for the game, not the profession.

Penalty kicks, at least in football, are a perfectly fair way of settling draws. Taking (and saving) penalties is a skill - a skill that very few players lower themselves to practice. A recent example is Liverpool & Chelsea, one of the teams practices the skill assiduously, the other one considers it beneath them. The team that practices won the match handily as they deserved to.
