"Harsh" bokeh is also something of a state of mind. I would argue that it is quite natural. I've been nearsighted all my adult life. If I take off my eyeglasses and close one eye, the OOF highlights and bokeh that I see have double lines, clumped highlights and some kind of physiological version of UnSharpMask where the brain is trying to sharpen blurry images, making a point-source of light appear almost like a spoked wheel. For this reason, I've never found so-called "harsh" bokeh to be all that unnatural.

I predict that when you get your M3, you will really "need" a short tele.
There, the Nikkors are unbeatable IMHO !

You may be right 😉 . But for now, the 50 is my priority. I was getting ready to jump at the Summilux that Ray had in the classifieds. But it was gone before I could get to it. That was about the price limit for me (probably a bit over it actually).

Yes, forgot about the 50/1.5 Canon. IIRC, the Canon 50/1.5 is closer to the original Zeiss Sonnar & has less "extreme" out-of-focus characteristics than the Nikkor wide-open.

Consider Canon 50/1.5. Also very compact and feels good on the M3.

Great for people indoors.

If you don't mind a bit bigger lens, the CV 50/1.5 is good as well.

Or, if you can spend more, a Summilux. Or the new ZM Sonnar.

Well if the VI-L sells, the Canon 1.4 will be in the classifieds. I had thought to keep it to keep a "fast" 50 but even though I normally shoot 50 or 100 ASA slide, I am not sure that I would really need to use the extra stop all that often and so it would get very little use. To get a really good performance at 1.4, you should be looking at a lux. The Canon is OK at 1.4 but IMHO doesn't become really good till F2 and you have that covered.

Dam, Have I just talked myself out of a potential sale.😱

If you use both the Summi and the 1.4 from the same bag, the Nikkor is the better choice. If you only want one 50 in your bag, the Canon is. My 2 cents ...
