Some of these lenses (availability) don't last but a few minutes...here one sec, gone the next.

No, wasn't implying that you, or anyone else, thought the box had any magical performance-enhancing qualities. Just that I've bought plenty of used Leica gear, probably more than most Leica shooters, & the presence or absence of the original box or other packaging has never been a factor in whether I would buy from a store (or individual on eBay, etc.). In fact, if it significantly increases the cost of shipping, I'd be opposed to getting the original box(es) (I remember the packaging for the M8 & M9 weighing almost as much as the bodies themselves).

Collectible items are a different matter, but even though it's undoubtedly expensive, I don't see the vast majority of Leica gear as truly collectible.

To Leica owners more than other owners boxes matter for resale, especially at KEH prices. Mind you I never insinuated that a box has anything to do with the performance of the lens if thats what you're getting at.

Yes, I too find it odd that KEH never seems to have boxes with their FS items...even almost new items. They obviously have the boxes for many since I've seen them buy certain lenses at some shows and when the same lens goes up for sale, it does so without the box. I'm certain they have a specific use for them...possibly sell them to certain dealers, thereby getting more out of a product otherwise. For the rest of us, it does appear many pricier items (not only Leica) sell better if it has the original box/case...so it's sort of part of the investment if one ever decides to sell at a later date.

Aren't most Leica boxes series numbered to the specific lens or camera that was found within it?

Yes, although I'm sure in some cases the sticker can be pealed off. My commenst above weren't specific to Leica lenses/equipment only, (from KEH), but most of the other major brands KEH sells too.
