Hi, guys.

I'd like to know your experience with these two lenses: the CV 50mm 1.5 and the 50mm 2.0 jupiter.
I know that probably the first is better, but how much?

Another thing: have you got images made with both?

Thanksss!

I think they're not comparable at all. The J-8 is a $10 lens and thus provides outstanding value for money, probably the best of all the Russian lenses with the possible exception of the Industar-61. The CV is one stop faster, but at least twenty times as expensive.

That said, I've never been disappointed with my Jupiter. Sharpness could probably be a little bit better, but maybe I've got a misaligned specimen. Color rendition and bokeh are very nice, and I like them better than what I've seen from the CV lens. However, if I've got sufficient lighting, then I tend to pick the I-61 instead anyway.

The CV design is nearly 70 years more recent, produced at least 20-something years later than any J8 you find. It is also nearly a stop faster, and likely still sharper wide open. A Jupiter though might be better in bokeh department, a lot less expensive, and a good enough user lens on absolute scale.

If you can afford the nocton, get a J-8 as well, won't strain your wallet.

so the pro and cons of the two lenses are:

nocton:
-sharpness (sharper even wide open)
-is a faster lens
-it costs much much more

jupiter:
-better bokeh
-very cheap
-old design

well, i'll probably look for a 50 jupiter and a fast luminous 35 (a format i like better).

anyway: has anybody got images taken with this two 50mm ?

I'm currently in the middle of a roll in which I am comparing my CV Nokton and my recently acquired Jupiter 8... I'll let you know when it is developed.

Cheers

Nick

I found the Nokton bokeh to be just fine.

It is a great lens, the only minor gripe is that it is slightly larger (wider) than most of its contemporaries, but certainly not enormous by any means.

Think I should point out that I make no assumptions that Nokton bokeh is particularly bad, just that Sonnar designs (J-8 included) are known for very pleasant and smooth OOF areas. Bokeh is not my top priority with 50s though, so I end up using Helios-103 (which I believe is better lens in most respects except bokeh) far more often than my J-8M.

I have both, and like both. I would start with the J-8 (very compact, good bokeh, cheap) and see how you like it. If you find there are shots you want but can't get with the J-8 (in my case, interior portraits), start saving up for the Nokton.

I've got samples of both on my photostream:

Nokton-50:

Jupiter-8:

Both are excellent lenses. The Nokton is a fast, modern lens that is sharp and contrasty (although not too much so). It renders colours very nicely. Many feel it is comparable or superior to all but the lastest ASPH Summicron ($2,500).

The Jupiter is quite sharp and has very nice tonality and bokeh. Ergonomics and build quality aren't as nice as the Nokton, but it is smaller and much cheaper.

Good luck with your decision.

Most of the pictures on the following two galleries of bands in low-lit clubs were taken with the Nokton 50mm on my R-D1.

It is a very sharp lens (where the photos above aren't sharp, it is because at the slow shutter speeds, either I was not steady, or the speed was too slow to freeze movement, deliberately or not). As has also been mentioned, it is a relatively large lens. I would someday like a more compact 50mm for street photography, but in the meantime, the Nokton serves me well.

An example is here:

I realize that the perspective is different on the R-D1, where the angle of view approximates 75mm, but the examples should give you some sense of its sharpness and how it renders out-of-focus areas.

thank you very much, sockeyed!!!
that's what I needed!

these lenses are very different, but I don't know which one I prefer.

The nocton is really sharper, and at 1.5 the in focus zone is so nicely small... wow!

by the way: some of your images are really great!!!

I've got both and, as much as I rate the Nokton over the Jupiter in most areas, Satan himself couldn't part me from my J8 - it has a totally different palette to the CV lens and you just can't have too many standard lenses.

So I'd say if you can't afford a Nokon, buy a Jupiter 8 and be happy. If you can afford a Nokton, buy a Nokton and a Jupiter 8 and be very happy.

I use J-8 with Bessa R and think it's great combo. You can find some pictures in my RFF gallery.

cheers
