Without getting into the pre vs ASPH summicron battle, I am wondering if the 35mm summicron pre-asph produces different results from the 35mm summicron pre-asph (obviously aside from the focal distance). Want to hear from people who actually experienced both, or have something to say they didnt like about the 50.

Also, is there any particular 50 to look for? I know people generally go for the 4th gen on the 35... just looking around and this one seemed really cheap--

I think the difference between the 35mm Summicron pre-asph and the 35mm Summicron pre-asph is negligible 😉

I don't think you can compare any 35 'cron to a 50 'cron. Unless you're looking at MTF charts. If you are, then the 50 'cron has the advantage.

Also, there are many flavours for different people. In my opinion, the collapsible 50mm Summicron and the last generation 50mm Summicron are best. Others swear by other types.

Crasis, did your gf get the lens AND the M2? She's lucky if she did, a great set.

Yes indeed! I'm wringing my hands hoping she'll like it. I recommended the M2, but not the lens. Apparently she read up on the lens and found out some interesting bits about it, such as the type 2 is one of the highest resolution of all the 50 summicrons but not the contrastiest.

Hey, that's ok with me 🙂

we'll have to get together for some street shooting when she gets her new kit. does she have a handheld meter yet?

joe

Nope. I've got one though. I can just use the meter on the M6 and lend her my oh so cute digisix. (I love that thing). That reminds me. I need to put batteries back in the M6 if I'm going to be using the meter now. Hah!

Oh.. on another note.. Have need for a B+W 43mm UV MRC filter? I uh, kinda got one for her thinking she was getting a Nokton 40, but silly me. 🙂

Wow big typo there. Meant 35 vs 50, both pre-ASPH

So what Im hearing there is no noticeable difference, so far at least. Two other things Im wondering-- did the 50 come in generations equal to the 35? (IE is there a 4th gen. 50 thats the same as the 4th gen 35?) And how much larger is the 50?

how much, i've been looking for good 43mm uv filters.

I got it from popflash (Tony Rose) for 43 US + shipping, whatever the heck shipping was. Hasn't even left its little case since I got it. 40 bucks CAD say? I save you a bit of money, you save me the hassle of bothering to sell it non-local. You could probably push me down in price if you wish. I'm lazy 😉

Anyways, yeah, definitely should go out on the streets together whenever her items arrive. Also, if you're free anytime during the week for a coffee, I'm up at the university 9-5, 5 days a week.

Ok, there's 4 generations of summicron 50s from what I can tell. Some of them are collapsible, some are dual range, some are rigid. I didn't know there was a summicron 50 asph but I've been wrong before.

Uhmm.. I guess you could consider the 4th gen summicron 50 to be.. like the asph? Asph like. Well, it's certainly contrasty so I guess that's asph like.

Of the rigid summicron 50 I've seen, it's thin and maybe 1.5 times the length of the 35/2 pre-asph. Collapsibles can go smaller, of course. That's all I know, sorry.

Yeah... not really into the lux's though, Well, would be but but a ASPH model is way too costly for now. Its basically between a 35mm or 50mm pre-asph summicron.

Hey, so lets change the subject a bit, but still stay on topic.

What do you like to shoot? When do you like to shoot?

Are you wandering the streets and shooting at people close to you? Do you like sitting somewhere and just watching the people go by? Do you like to take a lot of shots with no people in them?

If you take shots of people, do you prefer full body shots or head shoulder shots? Do you ever take shots in crowds?

Etc. etc. Lets find out what you like to shoot, then find you the focal length you'll love 🙂

Well, I do know Im a 35mm person. Into capturing more of the scene and a little less subject emphasis. Im just not experieced with M lenses yet, didnt know if theres some commonly accepted thing that the 50 is better than the 35 photo quality wise... because although that I said I am a "35mm person", I highly value sharp images and could live with a different focal length if the lens itself was a better performer. So far I think Im set on a 35mm pre-asph. Its just seems like the ones Ive been finding are going for high prices, close to the point where I could just pay a little more for an ASPH.
