I have received conflicting info on my 50asph annoying lens hood. Does anyone out there really know the answer? The issue is that it pulls out and turns to keep it from sliding back. On mine there is no friction or 'detent' or anything to prevent it from turning back and inadvertently retracting.

Does it "lock" when open and turned?
Leca repair says no.
Leica repair says yes.

If the answer is truly "no" I will sell this lens because it annoys the heck out of me.

Thanks

I have the new 75/2.0 asph with the same type of hood. It turns but does not lock in place, so I assume the 50 hood is the same. It hasn't been a problem yet, but that may be because the hood is slightly longer on the 75?

If you decide to sell the 50, then check out the new 50 asph black paint that was made for the special edition MP3. Great old-style lens with the clip on lens shade!

Jon,

I have that lens. Mine pulls out and rotates to the left in order to stay extended. It does not have any lock or detent other than the slot it rotates into. Having said that, I have never had it accidently retract either. I can see it being possible, but you would have to hit/move it in a way that rotates it right again so that it could collapse.

Exactly under what circumstances does it retract accidently.

Considering that you have one of THE best lenses that Leica has ever made, you may want to find a way to work with the hood.

Best,

Ray

Another option if it really bothers you is to trade it in for the new classic MP3 version (scalloped focusing ring and tabless) with the conventional clip-on hood. Optically identical but ergonomically and aesthetically it's nicer in my opinion.

Mine doesn't click into place, but it feels just a bit tight, and secure when it's rotated to the left. I haven't had it long, but have never felt like it was going to be a problem. Are you dragging your fingers across it when you focus or change aperture? If you have very large fingers, or worked with gloves, I can see how you might possibly rotate it back right when you're changing the aperture...

It seems to collapse when I put in back it the bag. It is irritating, but I LOVE this lens. I must agree that the focusing tab on this lens is equally irritating because of the throw. The tab on my 35 lux asph is great though. I think it is time to sell this 50 asph and get a LHSA or black paint version so it doesn't bother me so much. If I knew these versions were available at the time I bought the 50 asph, I would have gotten one.

If anyone is interested, send me a message before it goes on e**bay.

Very odd, perhaps there is not enough friction in your hood. Mine is fine and I have never had it slide back in. As for the focus tab, I have a hard time understanding how you can like it on the 35 lux asph and not on the 50mm...the focus throw on the lenses is identical in relation to the tab. That is, if you set the lens at any given distance, the placement of the tab will be identical on both the 50 and 35. I love this feature because based on where the tab is, I know the exact distance of focus for both lenses. In any case, it seems odd to me that you would say one is great and hate the other when they are for all intents and purposes identical. Regardless, I think the MP3 addition should be perfect for you.

Stuart,

I take your point. But the tab on the 35 chrome asph is very smooth and 'loose'. On the 50 asph the tab is smooth, but stiff and has uneven stiffness because of the floating element.

Maybe you are right, the MP3 would be for me. Enough whining akready!

Ahh, I can see that. I think I lucked out with my 50, as it is fairly loose. It started out fairly tight, but after about 30 rolls it got nice and smooth. There is a tiny bump inside 1.2 meters or so, but other than that it is very nice. In any case, the MP3 version sounds like it would alleviate your problems, so you might consider it. Tony Rose at popflash probably has the best deal.
