50 Summilux ASPH LHSA in black chrome?

I have recently been sold a Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH LHSA edition lens as a black paint model.

The finish appears a little duller than the black paint of my MP or M6 LHSA and the lens has a part number of 11628, which matches the silver chrome version, instead of 11627 for the black.

From what I've read these sets were only made in black paint or silver chrome? Does anyone know that if some were indeed made in black chrome?

If it is black chrome it's very nice black chrome! 🙂

B+W 43mm UV should fit the lens. There are threads here and over on PN that include the part nr. of the UV filter. I think it is B+W part nr. 23185 that works on the pre-ASPH 50 Summilux. Those lenses had a 0.5 thread pitch but it may be that the ASPH Summiluxes have a 0.75 pitch thread and will take any modern filter.

Thanks fellas. It looks like I've got a black paint one with a silver chrome number then. I may have to put it in a satin box in a display cabinet!

I've been reading through the threads, thanks Pete. It seems the filters/hoods/step-up-rings thing is a conumdrum I wasn't expecting either!

It is very unfortunate that Leitz/Leica have so many variations. I think its a by-product of them using all sorts of bits & pieces that are to hand on the factory floor. The collectors might enjoy it but to be honest its a bit of a waste of time. I tend to like older lenses and I had a heck of a time getting a filter that would go on the front of my pre-ASPH 50 Summilux. Makes me long for my old Nikon SLR days when you just bought a camera and a couple lenses and that was the end of it.

Yes indeed. I must confess that I have not used my SLR since I got into RFs but since it is worth nothing there is no point in selling it. What I might do though is sell all the lenses and buy one good quality longer length zoom lens that will cover the focal lengths RFs have difficulty with. Have you tried any of the new(ish) Zeiss glass on your Nikon?

Can't say for the ASPH but that was true of the pre-ASPH lens. You had to get a special Leitz filter so the clip-on hood works. Here's what I did: I don't like the huge Leica vented hoods so I bought a regular B+W UV filter and a discontinued CV 43mm wide-angle lens hood from Stephen Gandy for $29. It screws into the filter. I suggest the same for the ASPH - much less bulk out front and you have the hood for protection. The ASPH is not susceptible to flare.

I've tried three kinds of B+W 43mm filter on the LHSA lens - one older one marked "43ES", one new 010 MRC, and one new 486. All of them fit the lens fine, but the 12586 hood supplied with the lens won't fit over any of them. I have a Leica 43mm UVa #13206 that fits the lens and that the hood fits over.

It's odd and a little unfortunate that the "new" E43 version won't take the superior B+W UV(010) MRC filter and allow the use of the clip-on hood, yet that's never been a problem with the 50 Summicrons in years past for all models that took a clip-on hood. It's simply a matter of Leica making the barrel a fraction of a millimeter larger in outside diameter. I guess their reason is that it would require a change in the inner dimensions of an established hood model. Then again, they could modify the hood slightly and redesignate it with a suffix "s" or something like that.

Alan there is nothing to stop you (or DAG) taking the glass out of a B+W MRC filter ring and putting it into a Leica UVa ring. 🙂

I hardly think it's worth the expense of buying 2 filters. It makes more sense to simply file the outside of the B+W filter ring and take off about 0.25 mm from the outside diameter.

The Lecia E43 UVa 13206 filter fits the 50/ASPH BP LHSA and allows the supplied 12586 hood to fit as well. The earlier Leitz Wetzler 43mm filters also fit and allow the hood to slide over. I purchased some of these earlier filters from Kevin Cameras.

I also have a metal Waltz Nikkor 50/1.4 43 screw-in hood, whose finish matches perfectly, the black paint of the lens and this allows the Heliopan and B+W filters to be used. As this hood is smaller than the Leica clip on version, this intrudes very little into the 50mm frame-line and the vented section of the hood allows the edge of the 50mm frame-line to be clearly seen. Again Kevin at Kevin Cameras sold me the Waltz hood some years back when i purchased to use with the Nikkor 50/1.4 Millenium lens.

Nor have I. I have just found tongiht that I may pull it out for some shots I need to be closer to than I can get with the Leica- I've still not ruled out that the 80 will cover these shots, but tomorrow will tell. Thinking of shooting the F4 w/ my old ('63) 55 micro Ai'd.

I wish I could justify getting some of the Zeiss in Nikon mount, but having not picked up an SLR in 1 1/2 years I can't (yet).
