50mm lens choice for this type of shot

That is Michael Bialeki's work and he posts on this site. The lens he used is the Zeiss ZM 35 1.4. That costs about $1800. I have that lens, and as your budget is around $1000, the closest one I have to that for a very similar bokeh is the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2. The Voigtlander would be in your budget range.
If you want a 50mm lens w/ this kind of bokeh, then I would recommend the Zeiss Planar 50 f2.

You might also want to consider the ZM 35/f2. You'll lose a bit of depth of field isolation/speed but it ought to be close from a general image quality standpoint. And its a damn fine lens that is around your budget.

how about the zeiss sonar ?

The 50 most widely loved today is the CV 50/1.5 M version. I don't have one, but they are not very expensive and I have seen many gorgeous shots with them.

Here some samples

Not only is it a super "sweet" lens when shot fast, it's extremely strong from a technical standpoint, and very sharp stopped down.

Wow what a surprise. I was not expecting to see my image in this thread. Huss is correct, that was shot with the Zeiss ZM 35mm 1.4. As far as 50mm lenses go, I can't really comment on them that much. I have been using a V1 50mm Summilux for the last 16-17 years and I like it, but I have been shooting with a friend's CV 50mm 1.5 M-Mount version for the last 3 weeks and I like it a lot. I was in the market to get a Noctilux V4 (f1) lens, but after comparing it to some of my other lenses, I decided it would better for me to stick with what I have and use that money for traveling.

If the 35mm Zeiss is not within your budget, the Voightlander 35mm 1.2 is an excellent alternative.

Cheers,
Michael

How about a used Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron. You can probably find a user-grade v4 (same optics as the current model) at around $1000 and it might be all the lens you ever need.

Zeiss lenses tend to give you that 3D effect. They are known for that. But you won't get that effect in all the photos. It depends of different factors like aperture, distance to the subject, distance in between the subject and the background, framing, ...
Anyway, if you are stuck in 50mm the Zeiss Planar f2 ZM is a fantastic lens! I bought mine on ebay for under $600 mint.
I don't have right now access to any image i have taken with it but I'll try later to upload something.
I don't think you can go grong with that lens to be honest.

Great photo, Michael.

OP: as the bokeh in this shot is nothing to write home about, and there is plenty of light, I suggest any good modern multi-coated lens. For example a 50/2.8 Elmar-M, a Summicron, a ZM Planar, a CV 50/1.5 or 1.1, etc. Even f2.8 will give you more background blur than you need.

Roland.
