Hey Guys,
I love this camera!! I've been using my R-d1 mostly with the 28/2 ultron and have really enjoyed the time i've spent with this combo.

I want to get a bit more raw emotion and think a 50mm lens is the way to go.

Do you guys have any favourite lenses under $1200 or so?

Thanks!!

(I will put up some of my photos when I get home from work)

-Canon 50mm f/1.4 is easily 1/3 of that cost.**

-Jupiter 8 50mm f/2 are known for good quality optics at very low cost, but samples vary and quality control in them can be questionable.

-Leica 50mm Summicron Dual Range is my personal favorite and can be found for around $500 in excellent condition. A similar vintage 7 element standard Summicron can be found for not much more.

-Any Nikon 50mm with LTM.

**(I'm considering selling my Canon. PM off list)

Canon 50/1.2 - if you can find one that focuses perfectly on the RD1, it is possibly the dreamiest, yummiest 50mm one can wish for for that camera. I had one and I let it go, and I have been kicking myself for it ever since...

thanks guys! so many choices!

They all look great, just a matter of availability i guess? I want the yummiest ooooziesttt silky smooth lens!

The Leica, Rokkor and Nikkor look easy enough to find..What are your favourite places to buy from? I bought my R-d1 here and the transaction was really smooth

As was said above - there are many (some with examples):

M-Hexanon 50/2 - simply superb.:

ZM Planar - great lens

LTM Nikkor 50/1.4 - great Sonnar type lens:

CV Nokton 50/1.5 - great modern all around ASPH lens - and cheap too!

Industar 50/3.5 - small and fun lens:

Canon 50/1.2 - as said above - very cool lens.:

Summicrons - many versions - all have something to offer.

Summitar 50/2 - very cool lens, in some ways its more interesting than Summicron

And these are just one I have or have had.
Plus there are many many more.

To make things more specific - if you are OK with 50/2 - hard to beat Hexanon or Planar for the money. Of you need faster - CV 50/1.5 is your best bet.

At any particular moment the 50mm lens on my R-D1 is probably a Sonnar or clone (when it's not the 35mm UC Hexanon) followed by the f1.1 Nokton and the DR Summicron. Lots of choices. Ask yourself if you need one all-around lens or if you want a couple of specialty lenses. The yummiest smoothest creamiest is proabably a specialty lens like the Canon f1.2, though the DR Summicron comes close to delivering sharp with creamy smooth. With your budget you could get two great lenses; three if one of them is a well-sorted Jupiter 3.

CV Nokton f1.5 or f1.1?

Either is great. The f/1.5 is much more compact and more reasonably priced, although you have to budget extra for a screw-to-M adapter to use it on your R-D 1. The f/1.1 comes in an M mount and will fit right on.

Performance-wise they're both stellar. Although I love the "vintage" lenses that others have suggested, the Noktons are better choices if you want conventionally sharp, contrasty, low-flare images.

One thing to watch with the f/1.1 when used at full aperture is that small out-of-focus highlights in the background can take on a hard-edged, ring-shaped appearance; this example was made with a Micro Four Thirds camera, but you get the idea:

It doesn't bother me, but serious "bokehologists" take note...

I really like the look of the zm 50/1.5...So so creamy

the summicron/hex also sound great

Do you guys have a favourite source?

Zk Sonnar, early J-3

Wide-open at F1.5, on the M8 (I do not have an RD-1).

I am running amuck with my new digital camera in throwing lenses onto it.

Simlar 5cm F1.5, wide-open.

Overpriced, good collectible, not as good of a user.
I do NOT recommend.

RFF classifieds.
I bought both my Canon 50mm 1.5 sonnar and my Zeiss Sonnar 50mm from the classifieds.
I do consider whether the person is a name I'm familiar with. If not, I may search the person's previous posts. An endorsement from a familiar poster is also a good sign for me.

I love the look of the Sonnar..But it's 999euros..I think I can get a Summilux 1.4 v1 for the same money, which would you guys go for?
