i already owned a 50 dr and happy with it 95% of time, but flare annoys me a bit when it shows up. i put hood and uv on lens all the time. As i shoot more and more, a lesson learned that any technical problem can be fixed after trials. and the flawed tool extends my ability when i'm used with it. question is do i have to spend the time? can i get a shortcut and ask will a 50lux v2 do a better job?
 
A clean DR is pretty flare resistant, check yours for haze.

That being said, the 50 Summilux v2 is one of the Leica superstars wrt flare resistance, and lack of coma. But I like the DR rendering better (much smoother bokeh, IMO). Filtering is easier, too, if you want to use a Leica hood.
 
hi Ferider, totally agreed with you and that's exactly why i bought my DR. but i need some parallel comparison, just want my heart rest. that might be too much...
 
If used them both, but not side by side. I've kept the DR. Here are some of my Summilux v2 photos:

I own both, neither give me concern. But the 35 Summilux v1 is another story, with that I am very wary of the lighting.
 
Like guoshuo I have a nice and clean DR cron, but I've found it flares quite a bit when the sun is inside or just outside the frame. I've heard stories of v2's legendary flare resistance, but I've never shoot with one so I can't confirm that.

I've used every version of the 'cron since the DR, both V2 and ASPH 'lux and the 50/1 Noct (E60 version with multi-coating). The Noct is the most flare and secondary reflection resistant followed by the 'lux's. The V4/current wasn't too bad either once stopped down to f/2.8, the V3 a little worse and the DR was the most prone to washout in strong backlight with a very bright source. Having also used ZM 50's, I found them to be the most flare resistant at least equaling the Noct. A large pro hood would be a possible cure like the bellows type for medium format cameras but I doubt that's possible or practical with a Leica.
 
thanks guys for your input, i think i get it. Wonderful shots Roland, these pictures as well as the sticker post drug me. i will get a summilux and keep both. but the price gets a little bit crazy, time to wait and use the DR to its maximum like Thomas said!!
 
just got a deal with a decent guy, but with some oil on the aperture blades, as shown. In this case will the oils generate haze now or later as I read from internet?

I'm sure the 50 lux v2 does have distortion, but I haven't seen it quite as much as Roland's uncorrected version, which I think may be partly due to his use of film. I do see it and can measure it very slightly, but not to the extent of say the Hexar AF lens, CV 35/1.4, or many of my Nikkors or p&s at zoom extremes. Have used it for thousands of shots. I usually keep a hood with me, either the XIOOM trumpet, or the 12526, but rarely use them.

After read all the oily aperture posts on RFF, I no longer worried about haze, but will there be internal reflection due the oil? That will bring me back to the original point---flare

Don't worry, GS, you can always have it cleaned.

Here is why I keep my DR (shot over the week-end). It's just unique, IMO:

nice shot Roland, your works just make me want to shoot more still which i never messed up with. you broaden my point of view, man!
 
V2 and V3 before the Asph model have very significant distortion.

Neither the first `Lux or Summarit have much if any. The DR/Rigid have none.
 
Definitely check and see how it goes without a filter though - you could be getting flare from that.
