Now why don't you just take it easy, Group Captain, and please make me a drink of grain alcohol and rainwater, and help yourself to whatever you'd like.

Here are the codes I have found that are focal-length and aperture-correct for the M8 that can be done without whiting out the mount screws. They appear to be correct for vignetting. Codes are with the coding held at the top of the lens, read from left to right.

28mm M-Hexanon 011100 (Elmarit 28/2.8 ASPH)

50mm M-Hexanon 010111 (Summicron 50/2 v. 3)

90mm M-Hexanon 000100 (Tele-Elmarit 90/2.8)
(typically no coding necessary; a screw provides the 1)

21-35mm M-Hexanon 000001 (Elmarit 21/2.8)
(coding for 21mm only; must start camera with preview in 28mm position and use that position when shooting). This lens uses a 6-screw mount, but the extra screws are outside the coding area. Unfortunately, this lens uses a 35mm frame position, which is not compatible as far as I can tell with any Leica 21mm lens code. So you need to hold the frameline lever to get the code.

Cool; thanks for the info.

I've been using the 6-bit code reserved for the 35mm Summicron v4 (aka pre-asph) for the 40mm M-Rokkor.

Not a M-Hexanon, but (supposedly) also an optical formula from Minolta, correct?

That's the same one I use (my lens has the frameline lug clipped to show 35mm). The M-Rokkors have the same mount screw issues.

I also filed down the lug so that the 35mm framelines come up; nice tight crop at and after 2m.

I was able to "dye" over the screw; I can't imagine that Leica didn't deliberately choose this area to have their bit coding, I had the same issue with my 35mm f/2 ZM Biogon.
