645 pics

I used a Mamiya 645 Super with 45mm, 55mm, 80mm, and 150mm lenses almost exclusively for more than 10 years. .

First image is especially wonderful, Chris, with the groundfog and clouds behind the trees. Have you replaced the 645 with the Mamiya 6 you got, or kept it?

These next 2 were my first shots with the RF645. Simply to show how good it meters and records in a rookie's hands:

Also, thanks Antti & DustyWalker re the Ghost Hour image! I didn't even have a monopod that evening, so held the RF645 to my chest @1/4sec and held my breath.

I still have it, but I need to buy new lenses for it. I had to throw a couple of them away because they developed bad fungus infections I didn't need to spread to my much more expensive Hasselblad and Leica gear. I sold the Hassy stuff to finance the Mamiya 6.

I need a 150mm and a 55mm, and will replace them if I ever have any extra money. I've had the camera since I was 18, when my father bought it for me so that i'd have a professional camera to take to school, so I have a sentimental attachment to it, even though I have the Mamiya 6 now too.

Dirk, I really like this portrait, as it raises issues about culture, style, and the generations.

Thanks Doug - I think, she is in her early 50's.
This is what I love about China - a lot of people around still don't have this attitude, we get infused in our western cultures since childhood, to behave normally and do what is proper.

She is just enjoying herself - I like that.

I absolutely love the Mamiya 645 system - it is probably the most universal system to start MF with, which can be flexibly extended with so many other gear, while still be a LOT more affordable than Contax and Hasselblad.
You can start out with a 645 film body and some manual focus glass, put a digital body on it, use the glass on a Leica S, use Hasselblad glass on the Mamiya bodies or almost any barrel lens or MF lens for that matter, as the Mamiya bodies come with focal plane shutters, … I wish I had found out earlier about the Mamiya 645 stuff!

Also the Mamiya lenses are fully compatible with the Mamiya ZD, which I consider the EPSON R-D1 of digital medium format cameras - a timeless classic with a colour palette to die for (maybe that's just me though 😀 ).

Wish I could find one... But you're right about the system, it is great.

After all posted here I just done dare to post my lousy pics. They are that great in this thread.

Beautiful! I saw this one somewhere else - instantly has this look from the 80 Planar, that makes lens nuts addicted ;-)

You can find them fairly regularly on the auction site - the difficulty is to find a nice, well cared for sample. Mine is currently broken with a shattered mirror :bang::bang::bang: I hope to get it fixed by Mamiya soon, once I have figured a way to get it to Japan and back. Even if you have other MF gear, the ZD is a camera to keep just for the colours and the straight compatibility with the Mamiya manual focus lenses.
