7Artisans 35mm f/2 news and pre-production lens samples

Hi all,

I've been playing with a preproduction 7Artisans 35mm f/2
Salient info:

7/5 Sonnar formula
Same formula as sony e-mount lens, but with better coatings and QC
User adjustable like the 50mm f/1.1
Built in lens tab
Coming feb 18 (they say)

Wow, if they bring a whole range of lenses to the market, that's quite a game changer. Too bad there are no ltm versions so far..?
Why are Sonnar wideangles so rare, but now appearing suddenly? There was the Nikon L35 AF, the Rollei 35 (if we want to count a 40mm), and nothing else in the past, correct?

The original pre-war Biogon (i.e. 35/2.8) was derived from the Sonnar. The famous 1950's Biogon (plus the Super Angulon and other similar designs) is a symmetrical retrofocus design which is a completely different thing.

Wait, symmetrical wideangle and retrofocus is contradictory, isn't it?
Anyway, we don't know if it really is a Sonnar or just something related, so too early for speculation perhaps.

No, it's not. (To be precise, near-) symmetrical retrofocus designs are quite common among older Biogon type lenses like the popular Super Angulon 21/3.4 and modern lenses like the Summilux-M 35/1.4.

The Sonnar is not that special in this regard. I assume this new 35/2 would be similar to the 7/4 prewar Biogon. It even distorts like a Jupiter-12...

yep, thats about right...

They are bringing other lenses to market - the info is embargoed at the moment unfortunately ... one of them will be a real game changer!

No, its more similar to the lens found in the lens in the Nikon l35 or rollei 35 series - its more sonnar, and it in no way symmetrical.

I wasn't suggesting it's symmetrical...please read my previous comments.

I was referring to this:

Come to think of it, the rear protrusion should not be as deep...so this remains my (rather vague) speculation.

Thank you for sharing, info and pictures. To me it looks like good lens. And faster than Scopar.
I hope, they will make what I really need. Not expensive 28mm with focus tab. 🙂
