i'm thinking ahead here as i am camera broke for a bit but...

the zi has framelines for an 85 and the m3 has fl for a 90.

i could go for another canon 85/2 which i found to be a great lens or try for a leica 90. i did have the minolta 90 years ago with my cle and remember it to be a pretty good lens too. and then there are the 90/4 leicas, coated or not...

decisions decisions

anyone care to weigh in?

I think the 100/3.5 would be ok on either. Just a little tighter than the visible framelines. But if you really want to get another lens, the old 90/4 elmar will give you a nice "older" look, while the 90/4 elmar-c (or rokkor) is a nice sharp lens with a more modern look.

A bit higher in price would be the Konica 90/2.8, and various models of the tele elmarit (and the old elmarit).

I suggest you try one of these, and if you still prefer your canon 85/2, then you can go find another.

Oh, and I hear the Nikkor 85/2 is good too 😉

Joe,

The Konica 90/2.8 is a great choice as Ray suggests. The build quality is exceptional, as good or better than Leica counterparts. You can pick one up for about $500 or thereabouts. 10-blade design, this lens has very nice bokeh throughout the range. Very compact, 46mm filter size, built-in hood. Can't say enough good things about this lens.

My bias is to go wider. OK, individual lens quality/image characteristics aside (yeah, yeah, that's just too huge to ignore, but humour me here,) it's usually easier to move closer than it is to move back. When I have a longer lens, it can be more restricting. When I shoot with my 100, I often (though not always), wish it were 90 or 80/85.

Finally, 85 is somehow more exotic than 90 or 100. Totally irrational, but there it is.

Deciding which camera to use it on will determine which (brand of) lens to get, right? 🙂

you can look it up...but i'm pretty sure i only ever espoused the philosophy of canon on canon.

afa the leica and the zeiss, anything goes gents!

i will never be able to affaord the zm85 or a newer leica 90.
the canon 85/2 is within my budget as would be the leica 90/4.

i'm leaning towards the 90 as i would then have leica m3 with 50/2 & 90/4 all in tha same family.

the zi could remain 'pure' in it's loner set up with the zm35/2

and the 2 p's would still have all the pretty canon glass to play with.

I like the old 90/4 Elmar lenses and the Canon 85mm/1.9 for the speed. If you look around well, you may find a reasonably priced 90/2 Summicron from the older designs with built-in hood. They are super lenses. I would stay with classics and stay away from VC.

as appealing as that would be my income does not match that outgo.

I'd look for an LTM elmar 90/4. They go for 80-90 bucks or less. Very nice lens. And IIRC, copied from the zeiss design (correct me if I am wrong) so it would "work" with your ZI too. 🙂

Hmm... blank page. Go to KEH Leica M lenses. A bargain 90/4 Rokkor for $189

...You'd have the Zeiss with 35mm, M3 with 50 and 90, and P with 28, 35, 50, and 100. Sweet.
Wow! 3 nice cameras all with lenses; and I bet all silver. Doesn't the 90mm M fit on the Zeiss Ikon? 😎
