I'm seeing there are 2 types, both black. Just wondering if these are often up for sale, and if there is a big price difference.

I.E. are the fairly high prices relating to the type 2 or to all of the black 85mm f/1.8s?

The 85/1.8 is a fairly unusual lens. According to the Peter Kitchingman book, "Canon M39 Rangefinder Lenses," only about 3,000 were made (both type 1 and type 2).

You rarely see this lens up for sale and when you do, it goes for top dollar. Chalk that up to their scarcity and the fact that is an excellent lens.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I know the following has been discussed over the years, but how does the 85mm f/1.9 compare with the /1.8 in actual results?

I know the f/1.8 is an entirely different lens, and I also know the f/1.9 is a very fine lens.

I guess the basics would be:

sharpness at the various stops (interested especially in the wide open and fully closed apertures)

bokeh

contrast

rendering wide open

Thanks for your indulgence, heresay fully admissable.

BTW, here is the 85 f/1.9 (a mint copy I found you know where recently), wide open 1/30 on aps-c

I believe the late type Canon 85mm f/1.9 LTM is harder to come by than the Canon 85mm f/1.8 LTM. As for image quality, the 85mm f/1.8 is a really fine lens, giving good sharpness and contrast.

Cheers,

Again, from Peter's book, it looks like about 1,000 of the black-barreled 85/1.9 were produced.

I owned a chrome 85/1.9 years back. A tad soft wide-open, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing if you took a lot of portraits. I sold the lens several years back because I just wasn't using it. I've never owned or used a 85/1.8 so no comment on that, though I hear it's an outstanding lens.

it's interesting to know that the black 85/1.9 is a lot lighther than the (also black) 85/1.8. The 85/1.8 is shorter but bulgier. The 85/1.9 is a sharp lens, but the 85/1.8 is truely amazing. The main difference is wide open. The 85/1,9 was quite common Gauss type (like the 90/2 Summicron) but the 85/1.8 was a telephoto design CANON patented in all important markets incl. USA and Germany. designer was Jiro Mukai who did most of the last Canon RF lenses which were praised to fully reach, if not exceed, Leica glass quality.

Was there ever a dedicated hood for the Canon 85mm f/1.8 LTM? I'm curious.

Can you show a picture? Thanks!

Cheers,

Brian and others will know best, but if I'm not mistaken, the 85 takes the uncommon -t-60 and the 100 takes the t-60-2, which goes for 25USD or so (just bought one) and also works fine with the 85.

The hood which comes with the Nokton 50 1.1 also works perfectly 🙂

how do you compare 85/2 I have chrome and it is really sharp. It is a bit heavy, this is the reason I want to sell...

From what I read, the 85/2 is a good lens but no relation to the 85/1.8, which is much lighter, unique optical formula, very sharp from 1.8, rarer, and more expensive.

By f/5.6, maybe sooner the 85/2 may be just as sharp as the 85/1.8
