90mm Summicron...

Mine just came today, ver III, 55mm. The last pre asph 90/2.0
First thing that surprised me was the size, I was under the impression it was bigger. (Don't get me wrong, it's not a small lens, but not as big as I was lead to believe.)
I've messed around with it today but nothing serious, I might bring it out with my friends tonight.
Has anyone else used one of these with their M8's? I know anything longer then 50 isn't as populer as the wides, but I know I can't be the only 50-75-90 fan.
Let's hear everyones opinion?

I have the silver version and i love it. Sharp, sharp, sharp. Works great on film or the M8. Wouldn't let it go for the world. Well, maybe for an Asph.

i don't have the 90/cron but by far my favorite lens for street is my 75/lux 🙂
sorry i know you're looking for one so i have to tease with a picture 🙂

picking my camera up from the shop today! got all my lenses calibrated, woohoo!

O that was not nice, not nice at all.

Eventually I will have a 75 lux at this point I would trade most of my kit for one.

Edit: It look great by the way! I won't let jealousy get in the way of saying that.

Let's pick up where we stopped two days ago.
I discovered that my Summicron is Version 2 and not 1.

I have that lens, Canadian made. I got it new in 1984. It works fine with the M8 and is presently mounted. It has been call two lenses in one, because it is a bit soft wide open and then tack sharp closed down. It is sizeable and gets left behind a lot, but I now found a belt case for a cell phone/mp3 player that fits it, so it can travel.

Your photo makes it look bigger than it really is, but yes, it is smaller than one expects. I also own the Version III, E55 pre-apsh German 90mm Summicron, and it is the smallest 90mm f/2 lens I've ever owned, only bigger next to my Carl-Zeiss Jena 85mm f/2.0 Sonnar, which is incredibly light, but has a very long focusing throw.

I love the 90mm Summicron pre-asph. I do like the 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit far better, but this Summicron is "fast" enough and gives me virtually the same DOF results I would have from the 75mm f/1.4 Summilux: I tested them together and found the 75 'lux waaaay too big for rangefinder photography, and for over $1000 less, my 90mm Summicron gave me virtually the same results, in an easier to carry and hold package.

Now, if only Leica could ship me back my M8 and that E55 IR/UV cut filter they still owe me...
 
Great lens, I have a black one.

As already mentioned, it's a little soft at f2, but stopped down it becomes very, very sharp. This is an excellent portrait lens. It has that typical Mandler era fingerprint, which works exceptionally well in black and white.

That one is actually the E55 version, I guess that most recent one compared to the latest. It's become my main "gathering lens" for when I am out with my friends and don't want to be too invasive. I've also taken it to a few low light concert's that I've shot and it's performed above expectation.
I think this lens will be with me a lot.
