A 21 for the M-P?

I'm considering going someplace I've never been with an RF - a 21mm. The ability to use the EVF with a wider lens interests me.

I doubt I'd use it more than 10% of the time so I'd like to keep things economical. A C-V 21/4P is the one that jumps out at me, but I'm reading severely conflicting information on how well this lens performs on FF sensors (especially in a 240.)

Who here has tried the 21/4P on a M240, and what was your experience?

Check out the thread about the 21 Voigtlander. There are a lot of images and also discussion about its' performance on M240s. I really like mine but it's always used on film.

if you want to stay on the cheap, just get the 21/4 and be prepared to have to deal with some color issues along the borders. I've used it with both an M9 and M262 and prefer something else, but for the price, that's about your only option. The 21mm f1.8 Ultron, huge compared to the 21/4 (I have both), works great on the digital M's. I've used the 21/1.8 on both bodies noted above and love it.

I use the 21/4 uncoded on an M8. More than half of the photos look terrible prior to fixing the colour, majority of the rest look a bit off. After fix, they are all very good. But this is M8 (1.33 crop).

I was reading that if you code the 21/4 like the Leica 21/2.8 the corners and edges aren't half bad. Anyone tried that?

No real interest in the Ultron, it's just too big for my tastes.

Off to find the thread madNbad mentioned...

Ken,

I don't think we will see the size of lenses we use for film (e.g. CV 21/4, CV 15/4.5 Version I) work well on the current design of digital sensors. Take a look at the size difference between the CV 15 VI and the new VIII.

Yeah, I'm gathering - wides for FF DRFs have more in common with SLR lenses (i.e. need to be retrofocus.) If that's the case I'm probably more interested in saving up and getting a used Leica 21/2.8 - prices on them aren't bad.

The 21/4 thread doesn't have much on point other than a comment that it sucks on an M9.

Thanks!

Use my 21f4 on the M9 and have never noticed any problems. Have always been confused by the negative reports I see on this lens on the M9 on the web. Do not really have an answer except to say it is part of my digital travel kit: 21/35 or 50/90.

here's an uncorrected picture taken with the M240 and Skopar 21mm, coded as 21mm 2.8 elmarit
you can fix it with corner fix but i find it time consuming.
for now, my widest M lens is an Avenon 28mm, if I want to go wider, I have an AI-S 20mm 3.5

I used the Color Skopar 21mm f/4 on both the M9 and M-P. It worked fine for B&W, but color shifts too much in either to be useful to me for color work. It works very nicely on film and with the Ricoh GXR using the M mount camera module.

I sold it and went to the Leica Elmar-M 24mm f/3.8 ASPH early last year. That coupled with the lens code in the M-P produced excellent performance.

For one reason or another, I found I didn't use the 24mm very much (probably because I use the SL with the Elmarit-R 24mm and Elmarit-R 19mm much more of the time). A few weeks ago, I traded the Elmar-M 24mm for a second-hand Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH (along with some cash). This performs even better than the Elmar-M 24mm did, IMO.

As always, finding the 'right' lens often takes a couple of tries and some experience with any given lens and camera combination.

You're happy with the corner and edge resolution? Very interested...

That's very heartening - thanks!

Good info - thanks! I may just go ahead and give one a try.

How do you find the Tri-Elmar? I am very intrigued by that lens. I'm not so hot on the finder though, do you have that too? I guess for critical framing I can always use live-view anyway.

I'm beginning to think this might be like my long tribulations with a 75mm - first I bought what I could afford (a CV), then what I could afford (a Summarit) and finally what I really wanted all along (an APO-Cron.)

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get a Leica 21/2.8? I need to read up on the differences between the 11134 and 11135 versions.

The WATE is a great lens. Performs very very well both on the M-P and on the SL. Using it on the M-P, I have a compact Voigtländer 21/25 optical finder and use the lens mostly set to 21mm focal length. I particularly like shooting square format at wider focal length settings ...

My buddy Jeff at the local camera store gave me this portrait shot with the M-P:

Leica M-P typ 240 + Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH (WATE)
ISO 250 @ f/4.5 @ 1/15 @ 16mm

I used the 21mm finder and framed approximately. For more precise framing, I use the M-P's EVF.

A couple of boys, bored to tears waiting for their mom at a New York Starbucks, gave me this one with the SL:

Leica SL + Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21mm f/4 (WATE)
ISO 400 @ f/4 @ 1/20 @ 16mm

The WATE is an amazing performer and so compact compared to the Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 v1 or Super-Elmar-R 15mm f/3.5.

I'm quite happy with the Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4, actually. I know the APO-Summicron-M 75 is that increment better performing, but I like the size and weight of the Summarit and don't find that I'm missing out with it. The 35/75 pairing is just about perfect for my RF shooting ... Until I want wide-wide. ;-)

Buy once, and what you really want. Cheaper in the end.

What you'll really want is a 21 SEM.

Well, the specter of a 21 is back. Yes, I want a SEM but the budget for it is off in the future. I'm tempted to nab a used 21/4P for the duration, if I buy wisely I shouldn't lose any money when it's time to move it on.

I should look for someone here in Chicago that has one I could try for a few frames to see how it performs on my M-P. I already have the EVF, so that's an expense I wouldn't have (and really is the reason I'm even considering a 21 at all.)
