A Basic Canon M39 Lens Question

Why are all the Canon screw mount lenses set up so that the index mark for the focus and aperture setting is not at 12:00 but more like 1:00? If the answer is that it enables one to see the settings while looking through the viewfinder, I'd like to know who among us is able to actually read it. I can't, whether with glasses or without.

All the Canon screw mount lenses I have (and have seen) mount with the index between 1:00 and 2:00, just like you observe. Why? Who knows? Like you, I do not think that viewing the info through the viewfinder is the reason; it does not seem possible. Maybe they did that so you can see the info by peeking around the side of the camera, rather than over the top.

For what it's worth, Nikkor screw mount lenses set up the same way.

On second thought, Leitz screw mount lenses also mount this way, so maybe Canon and Nikon were just mimicking Leitz. That, of course, does not explain why Leitz decided to mount the index off center. Maybe the infinity lock/focus knob has something to do with it also.
