Australia/New Zealand A camera museum in Melbourne!

I just came back from a trip to Melbourne, I never realised that there is a camera museum right in the center of town! Those of you who live in the area probably know about it already, but if you are passing through the area it is worth checking out. It's in Michael's camera shop, which also sells film/dev etc. They have a cabinet full of Leica stuff.

I'm getting a bit carried away here, but not affiliated etc etc etc.

But it's a trap for tourists and noobs 🙂
Michaels has easily the highest prices in Melbourne.

I bought my first camera from Michaels in 1969 approx. It was a Nikkormat with 50mm/f2 lens.

But I agree with Spyro that it's a rather expensive store with salespeople who may be knowledgeable but are working frantically for their commission.

N00b+Tourist=me at that point in time, as much as I don't like to admit it.
I didn't dare ask the price for film. 😱

Well, I'm neither a noob, nor a tourist, but I used to process my colour film there a couple of years back. Don't remember the prices being unusual (perhaps that was meant for the equipment - I buy all mine on eBay 😀). Seen the museum, it's not bad.

Museum is great, prices are through the roof for new and used gear.

Calling it a Museum might be a stretch. It's a bit of an oddity really. If you want to pay $14 for a roll of film, or $600 for an old Pentax ME Super then it's the place! But - at least they still do film so hats off to them for that ...

I think I only go there to have a look at the collection of old cameras. it's not just leicas, they have many many things there. very much worth a look if you like camera history.
but yeah... a bit steep on the old developing!

tHE PRICES there is WOW $$ very high ...and some of the staff is not friendly at all..very snob from my experienced.

Good Lord, that's a lot of Leica! Good thing I don't live in Melbourne or I'd be broke.

Actually, when in Melbourne a few months ago I visited the ACMI Museum (Australian Centre for the Moving Image). Absolutely loved it. It's more history than the cameras themselves, but for those among us interested in all things cinema, it's certainly worth a look.

If you want to pay $14 for a roll of film...

Yeah... $23 for a roll of portra 400. My girlfriend bought me one a few weeks ago as a nice little gift. I nearly went back and returned it when I was informed it was $23 for a single roll.

That being said I bought my x100 from there last year and it was well priced, and they handled a warrantee replacement really well with that particular camera too.
