A codec for this file type is not yet available.

From what I've learned on the internet and here in this forum, I'm now shooting in 'dng' format. To transfer the images to the computer, I'm using the standard Windows application from the selection box that opens automatically when I connect the camera.

Eventually this brings up Windows Photo Gallery, along with a note that a new version is available.

When I follow the instructions on how to get the latest software, I get a window talking about Windows File Association, and giving me two choices. It says the new software is available at either:
Adobe
FastPictureView Professional

So, I click on Adobe, only to get the following error messge:

"A codec for this file type is not yet available."


I thought that all this software for 'dng' files was finished and in use. Am I doing something wrong, or is it really not yet available?

You don't mention the version of Windows you're using. Basically, how it plays out when I last looked is, at least for Microsoft and Adobe:

1. XP - no codec, but there is a registry hack that will display thumbnails in explorer. No help elsewhere however.

2. Vista and Win 7 32 bit - codec available from Adobe - free download

3. Vista and Win 7 64 bit - you're so out of luck. :bang:

There were some companies that were offering codecs you had to pay for - no experience with any of those.

I do not shoot DNG files but with my Nikon which shoots NEF files I was able to download software (Microsoft RAW Image Viewer) from Microsoft (for Windows XP) to view various RAW formats. On seeing your post I checked the MS site and was surprised to see it only supports Nikon and Canon. I was previously sure it supported a wider range of RAW files - especially DNG files given how widely they are used. So sadly I am not sure now what to suggest.

However as a last resort, perhaps this helps. There is a thread below that seems to suggest that Fastone Image Viewer will allow you to view files of this format. No idea if it works but I have previously used this software for other purposes and can say its very competent. And the link explains how the registry edit works and provides a link to the registry edit file, which may be your best bet!

EDIT:

On checking further I found that there also appear to be codecs available on the Microsoft Windows download - including DNG codecs for Windows XP as well as Vista. Sorry I am at work now and thought I had posted the link at home but it must not have completed posting before I powered my machine down and rused off to catch a bus. Have a look on the MS site and if you really get stuck let me know and I will send you the link. It may be what you need.

I'll try the link you suggested. As to which version of Windows I'm using on this computer, it's Vista.

Everything does seem to work right now, even though the software is telling me I should get the new version. Maybe your link will fix that.

Well, your link brings up a free trial of something I can buy, but that doesn't seem right. Even if Windows can't view the files, my other software can. I don't see any need to waste money on software just so I can view these files in Windows Explorer.

If 'dng' is to become a universal format, it seems that the people promoting it need to provide this tool.
