A Few from Rio de Janeiro

I'm not familiar with your other work (I promise to catch up on that), but this stuff is really really nice.
The cross on the hill in the fog is wonderful ! !
The only one I don't like is the first one because, IMO, the clouds are too dramatic.

I am imagining that the iphone color picture would look fabulous in grayscale, and (if there isn't already a w/nw phone-pic thread) you should kick one off with that picture.
 
My opinion about my own work (oh this should be good;)...

I think the first one looks digital because I over-sharpened it. I like the image, but it looks fake. In all honesty, that's what the clouds looked like. Maybe I'll have another look at the RAW and try the b&w conversion again.
 
Great photos! Still trying to decide where to go this summer, now Rio sounds like a fine option, even though 'scary place' echoes through my head unfortunately. Do you think it a safe place to travel?
 
couple of very nice shots!

My Rio adventure ended up using my Canonet and slide film... And the slide film got lost during processing.
The first and last film that i ever had lost had to be that special one. Argh!!
THAT put me off using color film (read non-self-developed) for a while...

Don't touch it.. it's a natural phenomenon with digital for blue to have higher sensitivity -more emphasized- in regard to green and red. (If you recall I was trying to explain it with graphs in the M9M thread..)

Rio is amazing. You do have to be cautious at times, but it's amazing nonetheless. I've been about 25 times and would be living there if it were in any way feasible.

But, it's better to visit from November to April if you like good beach weather. Their seasons are opposite ours in the North.
 
Great work, David! Once again proving the one camera, one lens theory. It sure seems to help one concentrate more on the subject at hand and the telling of the story. I used to think the 50 was best suited to this, but you and some other X100 shooters and some great film shooters are convincing that 35 works even better. My own experience with the 35mm FOV has also shown this in a small way. It has been driving me into P&S cameras lately. Lots o0f fun. Please post more of these fine pictures!

Did you get much use out of the T3? Would love to see some shots out of the little P&S
 
I'll post some more this afternoon. Thanks for the great feedback. I'd like to thank Jean-Marc Ferriere (RFF jmanivelle) for being a great guide and my new friend in Rio.

I didn't take the T3, because I decided at the last minute that I didn't want to deal with film for the trip. I actually had the camera, batteries, and film loaded in a bag when I pulled it out before leaving the house. I figured if I needed something REALLY discreet, I'd have my iPhone...yes, sadly, it would've probably worked fine for a few things. Luckily I didn't need it (though it took some great Hipstamatic shots...love that app).

Rio felt safe for me, but here is the reason. Jean-Marc had a car and knew the area, as well as obviously speaking Brazilian Portuguese. If I had to take public transportation, without language knowledge, my stress level would've been much higher. Of course, I was traveling by myself, so ANY travel companion would be added safety. Also, the G20 (?) meeting was about to start, and there were police everywhere on the beaches. It seemed the tourist areas were ok after sundown, but I wouldn't want to walk back from those areas to my hotel (the Sheraton, on the edge of Vidigal favela). In fact, last year there was a shootout in the lobby of the hotel I stayed in (and it's a very nice hotel). So, there is always a nagging sense of "what if," but I really felt safe at Sugarloaf, in Niteroi across the bay, and even on Ipanema and Leblon.

I hope that accurately paints the picture I felt as an outsider visiting there.
 
Rio de Janeiro is a very good place where you can shoot many good pictures. these are very good collection I would like to thank you for this sharing.

Again, very nice stuff.
Proves (again) that if you know what you are doing, you don't need a bag full of various lenses and two spare bodies :D
