Actually, after watching the video, for whats involved to make your own lens, commercial production camera lenses are not badly priced.

As I understand, glass polishing is patience and quality assurance rather than skills. You can polish glass by hand. If you have the time - see the comments section!

The unseen skills here are the really impressive for the hobbyist: the computer 3d design, the optical design and quality checks.
How did he know each lens was adequately ground?

He says about $2000 in equipment - but the accumulated design and machining skills are the real value item.
