A Hasselblad, more than 40 years after first looking.

Excellent series at the old mills, Vince
Many thanks Lynn - for some reason I’m drawn to ‘historic interpreters’ like those of the US Civil War etc. Upper Canada Village here in eastern Ontario (Canada) seems to be the nearest alternative for me right now. Plus the 1000f/CFV II 50C/12.5cm f/2 Xenon combo works really well with the subject matter.

CFV16I and CFV16II by Nokton48, on Flickr

I've had this Hasselblad CFV16 Version 1, for a while and I'm really enjoying using it. From KEH along came a CFV16 Version II, very similar but with some upgrades. Since I have an Anniversary 500C/M with my CFV16 working good, tethered to Phocus too, I also figured it's a good idea to have a backup unit, these do not come up often IMO. Serial Number is 3DSR2120. Menu says Firmware Revision: 270. Files have a slight Magenta cast to them but camera is staring to wake up. Has a lot of small marks so it's been used, sensor is pristine. Anything I should do to bring this out of Coma? It's on my motorized EL/M, I got all the CFV16 accessories when I got the first back. I have a second CFV16 Acute Screen, so that saves me at least $600. BTW these are my Olde Wedding cameras, repurposed for Blad Digital from the 2000's.

Vince,
Did you send your 1000F's to Jim Kilroy at Barn Owl? He just turned around quickly (once it got through the Que, a 16-S Back for me. Does he tune up bodies for your beautiful digital shooting?

Hey there - yes he adapted two of my 1000fs for the digital back I have. Time-wise he’s generally pretty good - he’s rarely had anything for more than a month. As far as ‘tuning them up’ for digital shooting goes, he initially had to make a few modifications for them to even work with the CFV II 50C back (1000fs and 1600fs don’t work with the back in ‘stock’ form), plus I had him calibrate the focus to ensure that it corresponded to the ground glass. He hasn’t had to do anything to those bodies in a couple of years so it’s not something that requires regular/constant adjustment. Despite what the internet tells you the 1000fs are actually pretty reliable.

Of course since I’ve now just said that something is now likely to go kerflooee. Jinx!

Always lovely work, Vince! 😀

I bowed to my emotional impulses once again this past week and some: I acquired another Hasselblad SWC/M. This is the third one I've bought over the past 35 years. I think I've learned now that I like this camera enough to just keep it, even if I don't necessarily use it all the time. The previous two were sold in service to some "pressing need" of the time, but I don't really foresee such pressing needs coming up again.

I slapped my NONS InstaxSQ back on it, loaded it with B&W film, and went for two walks so far. First one was simple exploratory ... I have shot a lot of InstaxSQ with the Hassy 500CM but mostly indoors. Walking and shooting is different, and I learned how limited the exposure latitude of InstaxSQ B&W is on the first pack. The second pack went much much better ... you simply can't be sloppy with it, but when you get the exposure right, it produces lovely results. The Color film has more latitude (still limited, but more).

I then flipped the back over to the CFVII 50c and did some light testing work, comparing the SWC/M Biogon 38mm against the 907x XCD 45P. I have to say: the latter is an amazing lens for being one of the least Hasselblad X-system lenses in the line up! I'll do more rigorous testing to explore the differences more thoroughly, but it is a very interesting comparison. (Of course, I cannot use the XCD 45P with film or with instant print, thus the genius of the SWC/M and the joy of its Biogon 38 ...)

The Hasselblad SWC has captured my fancy and fantasy for a very long time, since I was in my teens, and I am in my 70s now. It remains a remarkable camera to work with even today...
