A Long-ish and Thoughtful Sigma DP-1 Review

amazing amazing shots...great tools can do great things ;)

I love how the DP1 is becoming the 'digital' compact that the tc-1, GR1V, T3's have done in the 90's...I'm really psyched to see more of this camera niche come out.

Now there is for the first time a compact digital which can equal the IQ of the best compact film cams (T3 etc), yet the majority of forum participants reacts with scepticism.

Scepticism is a wonderful thing for an adult to possess. It keeps one from jumping on bandwagons and losing shirts unnecessarilly. :D

Seriously, the camera seems a bit too in-between for me. It's smaller than a DSLR, sure, but also VERY limited by its f4.0, 28mm lens, IMO. And if they put a zoom in it then it would be nearly as big as an SLR, wouldn't it? As someone else said, a 35/2.0 prime would be a REAL temptation.

There's nothing wrong with the lenses on the Ricoh's, BTW. My results, even at the "24mm" end, have been excellent so far. Much less barrel distortion than I expected; better than some Canon zooms, that's for sure!

VERY limited by its f4.0, 28mm lens, IMO.

The Minolta TC-1 is one of the best compact cameras ever, has a 28mm lens with a f3.5 maximum aperture, was selling for over $1000, and wasn't considered VERY limited.

The DP1 is only about 1/3 stop slower, but sells for far less (in real terms) and is a lot cheaper to run. ;)

Nothing comes for free, and if you want DSLR quality in your shirt pocket you need to accept some compromise.

If on the other hand, you don't care for this kind of image quality in a pocketable camera, then obviously the DP1 is not for you.
