A multi-year journey has begun!

Whoa, thanks everyone...nice to face the early morning with a cup of coffee and so many well wishes.:angel:

I will be, of course, posting on RFF from time to time just to keep my energy flowing as it does when sharing things. As I map and schedule each tour, there may be opportunities to meet with some of you along the way for guidance, help and a cold beer!

TX...yes, that is what I heard about east Texas. I definitely need your help on where to go when I head to New Orleans next Spring.

Joe...the last four years shrank my geographic area to our little neighborhood and the local market. Nothing wrong with a small area, but it is time to break out for me! Thanks for your assistance and encouragement.😉

Stefan, Tom A...being a native of the region, I am struck with the similarity of this project with say, a documentary of impressions of France. It has been an epiphany of sorts to realize that I don't really know from first-hand experience my own geographical region on this blue marble. And it is such a daunting task, time, energy, emotions, and such. Another awakening is how much others are curious about this mysterious area that I had taken for granted all these years.

We visited Charleston 5 years ago and didn't know what to do or where to go, so this would be invaluable. Plus, getting to meet you would be icing on the cake!🙂

Good on you, Dave. I'll look forward to seeing your work. Too much done on the South is patronizing and simplistic. It's an area that has its warts, but today I think that the good outweighs the bad by a great measure.

Most importantly, I think Dave would never, ever make unethical or improper photographs. At the same time, Texas law regarding candid photography is so ambiguous even someone who is absolutely innocent, like Dave, could unintentionally break Texas' law.

The very last section in the post.

"There are a number of laws regarding photography and voyeurism which vary from state to state (See this list). All are related to invasion of privacy issues. Texas takes this one step further via the Texas Improper Photography statute which states (in part)that it is an offense to take a photograph "without the other person's consent and with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person".

The key here is any person. So you have to be sure candid photos could not possibly be used for sexual gratification by any person on the planet. There are a lot of strange people on this planet. With regard to intent, the decision to arrest you and charge you depends upon how the police and then the prosecutor decide what your intent is.

There are many other discussions of this ambiguous law on line.

I have exhibited candid photographs in art galleries and had them featured in curated photography blogs. This background could indicate my intent was entirely artisitic in nature. Still, I would not take candid photographs of people in Texas... especially in small towns.

Seeing your planned trip/ project warms the heart, and wish you the best of luck. The Deep South is an area that holds my fascination, and will be interesting to see your work that comes out of it. Hope you will keep us all posted, as time and your project permits 🙂
 
Well, this morning, I finally decided to ask for help in computer-related things.

I don't have a website or a blog (I have no idea how to do one), but I have mapped out an ambitious tour plan which involves five separate tours in a rough star-shaped pattern with Atlanta being the center of it. It will take 12 months just to do these the first time with, I am sure, follow-ups at later dates.

I would like to put these routes with dates, etc. on some kind of map that I can post and edit as time goes on. It will also help with scheduling, costs, reservations, medical facilities locations and a lot of other things. I really don't want to get too wrapped up with technology but safety demands with my wife's health may require special considerations and planning such as an iphone which I hate...

Any recommendations would be very welcomed.:angel:
 
I wish you the best of light and shooting in what I'm sure will be a very rewarding project, Dave. Looking forward to hearing about your progress (and any interesting anecdotes along the way), and seeing the occasional photo which I'm sure you'll be generous enough to share with us.
 
Certainly an ambitious and worthwhile project.

The phrase "The Deep South" strikes fear in the hearts of many. It will be interesting to see how that legacy plays out in the work.

In Texas we say there are only 2 kinds of people, Texans and those who wish they were.

A popular license plate around here is, "I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could".

start with a blog...no cost, pretty simple even for old folks like us...websites are nice but i make no money at this so would prefer not to spend any more than i have to.
 
Great project Dave! It will be an exciting adventure, I know you have already been working on ideas and planning. As many other here I'm curious to see some of the pictures and to hear some stories about. I'sure you'll make a good use of your cameras. including the new one!
