a paypal warning

Just my two cents but if you did not receive an email from Paypal within minutes after the transaction was completed and neither company has the transaction in their books (the transaction details MUST appear in your Paypal history) you probably have visited a faked NIK software site with a fake link to a fake Paypal site .... Nevertheless, sorry for your troubles! That really su**s!

10-1 it's a fault at the Niks end. Over the last year I've purchased seperately both Dfine and SEFX Pro 2 online and had a major problem with Niks. I attempted to pay on both occasions by credit card and the site refused with "a gateway error". I went via both the Europe and USA site with the same error. I contacted Niks who suggested I remit cash! WTF! After a month (on both occasions) and much ranting from my end they submitted an invoice and a separate arranged link to facilitate payment.
I now have both pieces of software but clearly their site has major discrepancies in accommodating payments.

Persist with Niks - for sure it's at their end.

I am honestly not overly concerned about my bank getting my money back. I'm due time they will.

What is important here is that two companies (one VERY LARGE one) can act so irresponsibly with a consumers money. Neither company is taking any responsibility for it and the PAYPAL rep (and I suspect he will regret it) has gone so far as telling me, when asked repeatedly, that it is NOT a PayPal transaction and this they have zero responsibility. Both times I explained to him that I have photographs of the PAYPAL interface for payment on the NIK SOFTWARE site.

These corporations seem oblivious to the global groundswell of negative sentiment towards this type of behaviour. It's incredible really. The masses will be burning down the big office tower doors before they clue in.

I have notified official sounding folks in both offices that they have until Monday to sort out a solution before I file a theft charge with the local police and begin submitting articles to the press (who I also work for).

It is a big hassle, your time [ which has a value BTW] is being used up on this.Sucks

But there will be no burning down by the public, they are too apathetic
[ maybe the French will] and divided. The corporations know this.
There is no need to be polite to these outfits from the get - go. Threats and intimidation are all they understand, never speak to anyone on the floor, always tell them you wish to pass on compliments to management, usually gets you through to some clown.
Start an `Paypal sucks' FB page.

+1

if you didn't receive a payment confirmation/receipt email from Paypal and do not have a transaction id then Paypal is more than likely telling the truth when they say your purchase wasn't through them.

go after Nik and tear them a new one.

Yes. Great Idea. But what paypal software should he download? (Assuming, paypal is the one to blame).

Nik software paid for via PayPal. PayPal has no software to download. Nik Software has software to download after you pay with PayPal.

Reminds me of:

- Who's playing?
- Yes.
- Yes is playing?
- No, they played before. The Who is playing.
- That's what I'm asking you.
- I just told you.
- So who is it?
- Yes.

...what else would you expect from bankers

Unlike in Europe and presumably other places, here in the USA paypal is not considered a bank and is therefore not required to operate under similar regulations. They are just a payment gateway or some BS. This is why they can get away with ripping us off. They can transfer money out of a bank account instantly, but transferring money out of a paypal account into a bank account can take several days or weeks. A friend of mine started a business and chose paypal to handle payments. After a while they froze the account for up to six months due to an "investigation into suspicious activity" but wouldn't explain why. It put her out of business.

One time I sold about a half dozen items on feePay in a month. No problems ever since I created the account in 1999. I have transferred tens of thousands of dollars through the feePal account that feePay forces us to use. Never a problem. They determined they needed to hold MY money for a few weeks but wouldn't explain why. What???? Banks get away with all kinds of things, but nothing compares to paypal. Crooks.

WTF indeed.

I think they think they can get away with it because a sizeable percentage of customers either don't quite grasp "computer stuff" (funny given they're purchasing "computer stuff"), or because people just don't want to be inconvenienced and would rather consider the money lost than "waste" all that time fighting a faceless ghost (ghosts don't steal money, right? Do you have any proof? Ha-ha!)

Yep, this happened to me, and also a few sellers freaked out thinking it was me that wouldn't give them the money. They held the item for a month until PayPal let go of the funds. Eventually, more people realized that this was the new "normal".

They change their policy all the time, and can pretty much do anything they want. Once a serious competitor shows up (if), they will start getting religion and treat their customers better.

I have had issues with both eBay and Paypal in the past, but after a thousand or so transactions, I can't complain all that much. No company, big or small, is perfect, and you are as likely to get ripped off at a mom-and-pop store as you are by a big corporation.

I and others here have had bogus Paypal transactions in which we thought we were paying to or being paid from Paypal only to find out that it was a sham site. Check the Paypal transaction verification email which you should have received within two minutes of sending your payment. No email? Then Paypal wasn't involved. If there was an email, check your bank statement or credit card statement for the transaction and use that information when you contact Paypal.

I've seen similar conversations on other sites and they way the future predictions wrap up is the same: feePay owns feePal, we have no choice because feePay dictates we must use feePal, and they don't care about the small players. They are trying to grow into THE giant online shopping site but do nothing but process transactions and collect fees from sales between third parties. Meanwhile, Amazon is coming from the other direction. In the end, everyone will join The Collective and play by their rules if they want to get any business at all.

Something else to be aware of connected with PayPal. 10 minutes ago I received a PayPal message that my recently acquired item could not be delivered by UPS as " address incorrect" and "please follow the link for details". I haven't ordered anything as of late!

It's malware - be aware if you receive such a message.

Coincidence or what?

that sucks, seriously.
I am a software engineer "in the know", that's why every time I use paypal or any other means of money related transaction over internet, I never know if it is going to be ok this time.
There are too many things that crooks (not a legitimate "other end") can do in order to steal your money. Man in the middle, browser plugins, etc etc, you name it.
All that said, I still use paypal/ebay. As everything in the modern world, they are built to serve legitimatize customers with minimal headache. Adding layers of security would make paypal/ebay very hard (if not impossible) to use. Paypal has its own merits, at least you are not giving away credit card information on every transaction. Remove paypal from your equation, and just imagine effects of giving away to some crooks your credit card details.
In your situation, I would contact your credit card company and claim fraudulent misuse of your credit card. Credit cards companies usually almost immediately refund your money (if your your credit history proves you are ok) and then investigate your case.
With regard to online security, there are a few things to do, depending on the paranoia levels
- use browser that you never update with plugins
- use it on a "sandboxed" operating system/HW, preferably linux over dedicated or virtual machine
- never, ever get to paypal site from mail links
- before supplying your credentials over internet, always check certificates of the "other end"

Since I wouldn't agree to sign up for Paypal's credit card or give them my bank info, they cut me off. Since then I have been buying on feeBay by using USPS money orders. Some sellers won't deal that way but I've found that most will. If they won't, I don't bid.

Does anyone else think that Nik's site was hacked and the PayPal links were compromised?

Could be. But it is not particularly likely, such a incident would have many victims, and their reactions would be quite public and very easy to google - and there is nothing like it audible on the net. It is more likely that John's computer/browser has been individually compromised - in which case other victims might have been hit at entirely different and unrelated webshops. Or he followed a link to some bogus site - in the past months I have received several spam mails of highly dubious origin offering Nik FX...
