Stephen,
I keep reading on DPreview that there is an M mount to mini-4/3rds adapter in the works and that CameraQuest will carry it.

Any truth to this?
What will it cost?
Are you starting a reservation list?

The Mini 4/3 adapters should arrive by late December. $175 + shipping
($8 shipping within the US, $35 Express Mail shipping internationally).

Initially there will be Leica M and Canon FD to Micro 4/3.

Eventually other mounts will be added as well.

Email me at Stephen@CameraQuest.com to get on the waiting list.

I am on the list. Finally, a way to use M-glass with a real, modern digital rangefinder. 😀😛😀 Albeit, with a 2x crop factor. Oh well, time to really start using those 21mm and 14mm lenses. I predict a rush to wide aperture lenses.

Are micro 4/3 cameras rangefinders?

Depends on your definition of rangefinder. they aren't in the traditional sense, but in my opinion this is what the traditional film rangefinder will evolve into in the digital world: small, inconspicuous, light, quiet (silent), excellent in low light (bigger sensor and image stabilization for better picture quality), and using the best lenses available (new M -> m4/3rds adapter). Oh, and LiveView viewfinder without a mirror box.

a very interesting system

a very interesting system

While the G1 will not be rangefinder in the sense of an image focusing patch, it will be focus by distance and visual verification of the image.

Every once in a while, I wake up in the night with software ideas, and there I can think of no practical reason that some software trick could not be used to "mimic" the focusing patch. Right now, all you see is an optical improvement, and it would seem the EVF zooms in so that focus can actually be verified. Couple this with the green dot, and a totally new type of range based focusing system can be built.

From all reports, even though the camera is EVIL, the electronic viewfinder is up to the task.

LTM would be very cool too!

I am on the list soon!

The G1 just came in the mail. Smaller M lenses would definitely be a nice fit, especially the very small/pancake ltm lenses. The stock zoom, 14-45mm, is about the size of a 50mm Summilux, but lighter.

Toulumne;

Can you please let us know how you find the EVF relative to the other film based RF's that are used around here. I happen to have an M6 as a reference point, and I'm very keen on knowing how someone who shoots RF finds this camera.

I've put myself on the list, and I'm hoping the 25mm CV turns the G1 into a bit more than a glorified P&S camera.

Dave,
I like P&Soots, so if they've added some real glory to that category I will be happy. 😀 I will definitely let you know how the electronic view finder works. I use both M bodies, CV bodies, and the R-D1 body, so I have what to compare it to.
