A quick question about Stand Development

I have Paterson tanks, which need about 300ml per film. I use a 2 reel tank for one film, and use 3ml of Rodinal for about 350ml of developer, to make sure the film is covered. I just regularise the temp of the water at the start to 20 degrees C.
I leave it 2 hours and turn it gently after an hour.
Fix as usual.

Concentration is not important. I use 3,5 ml to 350 ml water and use what I need. 1H stand, 30 min stir, cold water. Works fine.

The minimum of 5-6ml per roll comes from the manufacturer's instructions as I recall. I have done stand developed with less than prescribed amount without too many problems.
I would suggest using a greater volume of developer solution to reduce bromide drag.

The speed loss from using Rodinal and bromide drag in negatives with large bright exposed areas are my main problems with Stand developing.

I developed 2 films today in a Paterson 2 reel tank -Delta 100- and increased the amount of Rodinal to about 9 ml for 630cl of water Again 2 hours and a turn over each half hour. I think it was slightly too much and a waste of Rodinal, so back to 3.5 ml for the next film.
I don't have a scanner so will have to start photographing a few of the negs to show how they are. Advice about cheapish scanners most appreciated.

@ ulrich..I'm not sure there is a minimum dilution last year I mistakenly used just 1 ml (!) of Rodinal: I left it for a bit longer but it seemed to come out OK

Rick is "Bromide drag" the corona the surrounds a dark area on a bright field?
On a picture that my son took it looks like a fisherman is being drawn up to a UFO by a white light. I thought of it as a defect, he thought it was a lucky feature.

I use 1ml Rodinal and 1ml HC-110 in 250ml stand (invert every 20 min) for 1 hr. Compare with Rodinal plus borax and ascorbate.

I would like to try the stand development.

I have a roll of TRIX that I have either exposed at 400 or 800. I think perhaps it's a good idea to use stand development because it seems to be more forgiving with high lights, so I can just develop it using the time for 800 and without worrying too much.

I'm thinking of using 1:100 dilution, with agitation of first 10 seconds and 1 slow inversion every 30 minutes, for 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.

My question is : according to some French website, I need at least 5ml of Rodinal per film, is it true? I need only 250ml of water for a single roll, if I put 5ml of Rodinal, it makes the dilution 1:50, not 1:100. With this rule, I can actually never achieve the dilution of 1:100.

Or should I just develop it using the time for 800 in 1:50 ?

Any idea ?

I don't believe anyone suggested investing in a 500ml (16oz) tank. If you plan to do a lot of this, it seems the easiest solution.

I wonder if this would work, with your 250ml tank. How about mixing 500ml at 100:1; use half of it for half the time; pour it out, and pour in the remaining fresh 250ml for the second half of development. (If it doesn't work, you didn't read it here, 🙄)

I use 5ml of Rodinal to 290ml of water in my tank. Just use a full tank for the one roll. Then you'll know you have plenty of developer. I develop for 60 mins at 1:100. All good. You'll be fine. Film development isn't always an exact science. Unfortunately I've had to develop with sometimes having little kids around and souping a film and keeping watch of children never works, yet I've made mistakes with Rodinal volumes but things work out OK. So don't worry too much if you use 3.5, 4 or 5ml of Rodinal. Just give it plenty of time.
