...and when you find them here (in the US) many times the body is Leica, but the objective and, more often, the occulars are not. Mine don't say Leica on them, just 10xWF (wide field) and the number 311581. I got it (an SZ-4, 10-30x zoom, with a very nice spring-loaded articulating arm) on eBay for half what my other scope cost me brand-new (a Meiiji 5x/10x non-zoom). A lot of these Leica scopes had been used as inspection scopes in the semiconductor industry, then when Silicon Valley hit the skids you could buy them for a song.
I must say I'm impressed (but not surprised, given your meticulous nature) with the surgical scope...I've personally known only one general dentist out of hundreds who had one. Only about 40% use binocular loupes (vs those little flip-up magnifiers), and most of those are <3X. Then again, all my colleagues in Europe have scopes in their labs, but here in the US probably only 20% have them...and of those, I'd bet 50% are used as hat racks 😉 I'd feel like I was blind without it.
