I really like the idea of recatngular hood that comes with 35mm ASPH 'Cron, it appears to be the optimal one for 35mm frame format.
Isn't there similar kind one for 50mm/2 'Cron available ? Perhaps even by 3rd party manufacturer ? Of course, I always use the built-in one (sliding) into my 50mm/2 'Cron, and find this approach quite versitle (except of the fact it doesn't click into its working position - once fully retracted), but would certainly prefer the optimally-designed rectangular one...
Can't see the reason why suhc kind of hood couldn't be offered for 50mm/2 Summicron (or actually any other Leica M lens)...😉

Ok sorry the early 5cm foacl length crons had a 39mm screw in filter and a 42mm push on diameter, with a ridge to locate push on thinhs like lens hoods.

Leitz both did an inverted cone and a fold up box kite like hood. It looks like a box kite when deployed and it is like a metal sandwitch when folded up. The fold up hood was really for the LTM cron on a LTM but you can use it on the early M crons (42mm outside diameter crons) as well.

OK, Noel, thanks. I'm pretty weak in Leica history...🙂

I just wonder what restrains Leica to produce a rectangular hoods for their fix-focal lenses (except 35mm ASPH) bearnig in my such design would be more optimal then the regular rounded onces ? In particular for probably the most popular 50mm focal range...

the early leitz lenses were low contrast even with the barn door (big as a barn door) hoods, the late cron, was pretty high contrast, dinky hood ok.

As Noel says, you need the outside hood flange thingy. All Leitz lenses with a 39mm filter thread had the 42mm od. This can make hoods very versatile. I'll sometimes carry 35 cron, 50 cron or elmar and 90 tele-elmarit lenses but only one hood (a 12585). It's not optimal on the 90 but it's better than nothing. For the current 'cron the best deal are those Chinese made metal vented hoods you get on ebay. I had one which took a 52mm snap cap, very handy indeed and much better than the built in model.
