a sad history?

We need to stop posting about what we're waiting for. Any mental health care provider reading this stuff would have us committed.

Eh, that thread doesn't bother me. What does, sometimes, is that line in my .sig file... 😉

Ever snce I was a kid I've loved "sending away" for stuff. I used to spend summers with my grandparents who would save cereal box tops through the winters for me, I would add what I had saved and we would send away for whatever the toy was. I then spent the summer bothering the postman, "Is it here yet?". The toys would never get delivered while I was at my grandparent's home, usually a week or two after I'd gone home....and dummy thay I am, I played with those toys instead of packing 'em away to sell now for ridiculous $.
This is just a continuation of that.
I also listen to re-runs of old radio shows and one of them I've been hearing was sponsored by "Quaker Puffed Oats! The only cereal shot from guns!" and the announcer has mentioned the "complete camera outfit! Just like dad's!", I'm going to see if I can find out what that actually was and find one :bang:
Probably some box camera(not a bad thing) that uses some of the hard/impossible roll films....and almost certainly silly money for an indifferent camera...
I figure this hobby of mine is still less than beer and hookers(well less self destructive anyway) 😀

Joe,

We are a small band of dedicated preservationists who are in the process of rescuing orphaned RF's from the closets, attics and antique stores throughout the world.

Our service is so vital to society that we should receive special funding from the UN for world heritage cultural preservation! 😎

Rob, your post reminded me of my young teen years in the mid 50's when the new Sears catalogue would come (it was Simpson-Sears in Canada). There would always be a coupon to send away for their special "Camera catalogue".

I would fill it out and mail it, then wait what appeared to be an eternity for it to arrive. But when it did come, WOW the thrill of looking at all those worderful and expensive toys, various German brands and of course the Tower house brands that we now see on aBay, sometimes going for ridiculous prices.

Waiting for the mail always brings back that memory to me. 🙂 🙂

Regards to all,

Bill K.

A bunch of good upbeat answers to Joe's question. It seems like RFF often functions as a support group and it very often eggs on those who are hesitant about a purchase.

I think it can be statistically proven that if it were not for rangefinder cameras at least 33% of the members would turn into serial killers .... or worse.

I remember those Sears (and Montgomery Ward) camera catalogs, too. I still remember that a Contax III cost $444.00, in about 1954. ( I don't remember which lens, and in those days it was sure to come with a "never-ready" case.) I was in high school, and that price was probably more than my dad made in a couple of months. Look on ebay - they still sell for about that, except that the dollar amount is peanuts in comparison. That's progress.

Yes, with my collection of FSU cameras (Zorki and FED and Kiev) , I'm sure we are helping to preserve a priceless heritage of photo history. I even have three old VX-model Exaktas. Wonder what one of those Russian film-holders would have cost back then - except that back then we probably weren't on speaking terms with anyone who mattered in the USSR.

Who remembers those stamp collecting ads on the back pages of comics? $0.25 for a thousand stamps or something. I would tape my quarter inside and hope. Waiting, waiting, waiting, that they would arrive. Sometimes yes, most often no.

As an advocate of the preservationists theory put forth, clearly it takes time and commitment to check the classifieds 7-10 times a day and of course moniter auction sites, etc. but I am (we are) willing to do the job!

And speaking of serial killers, I live less than twenty miles south of Pismo Beach, CA, where another nut went berserk the other day. Now, if he just spent more time collecting RF cameras ----
