This teddy bear is part of a roadside memorial along US Highway 285 north of Artesia, New Mexico. It is part of a larger display that included two crosses and four teddy bears. This was the last photograph that I made that day, as the sun was setting. My son and I drove on to Roswell, where we stopped for dinner, then headed north toward Santa Fe.

Chris. I really love this series of yours. You should really package it in a book. It's a great set.

Very nice Chris, in a creative sense. It does pass on a feeling of gloom, and sorrow. Seldom see you do colour work, and now several in a matter of days.

In August, my son and I drove out to New Mexico and spent a couple weeks taking pictures, almost all in color. I shot 40 rolls of 120 size color transparency film and 3 rolls of 35mm black and white.

Chris, thanks for posting. I have always enjoyed your posts. U really have a good eye.

Sounds like u had a good time with your son...

I took this one a few minutes before the one I originally posted. The light was changing rapidly as the sun set.
Glad I scrolled down before posting. I was going to say sometimes a strong photo, and this one is emotional, has a bit of luck involved. The light in the first photo is just right, to my eyes. Luckily, you arrived when the light helped to take it from a documentary photo to something stronger.

I think there is a lot of luck in all of my work. So many of the things I photograph, though they are 'static' subjects, are really fleeting moments. These bears probably didn't stay up long. A lot of the old buildings that I have photographed are gone, some torn down within days of me photographing them. Sometimes I see interesting things that someone moves a few minutes later. I always have a camera with me. So much I would miss if I didn't!

Chris have you thought about doing a photo book with your NM shots in it? - I think it would be a success. New Mexico, town and country, really does capture something essential in the human psyche and I think your photos reflect that well.

I have. I want to scan the rest of my photos from the trip, then I may try to put together a blurb book. I have about 20 more photos to scan.
