Besides for RFF, what is a safe source to pick up a QL17 GIII? Should I trust Ebay? I would love one in black but that makes the price skyrocket. Ialso fear the meter would be off. Thanks in advance!

There shouldn't be a huge difference in picture quality between the black and chrome finish! (Being facetious). People would still come up to you and ask if it's a Leica. I picked a chrome one up on addiction-bay the other day for less then $30. Clean. Meter's accurate. Seals falling off. (No surprises there). Haven't tested shutter speeds yet. Interslice $10. Even got myself a weekend project as a bonus.

I've purchased 2 of them via Ebay. One about 2 years ago in as-is shape with a stuck shutter and cruddy light seals. Baptism by fire in camera repair! Has worked fine ever since.
Second one recently, black, in surprisingly nice shape.
I think it really depends on the seller and how accurately they describe it. I thought I scored a real goodie with a "recently overhauled" Mamiya SD for $18. More like recently hauled-over. 🙁 Very poor with one critically bent shutter piece. I kept it, since I figure $18 is fair for a parts camera and used pieces of it to fix up an otherwise working but cosmetically challenged one.
With Ebay, you really don't know until you receive it and check it out.

As a general advice regarding eBay sellers, it seems to me that the most revealing info appears once you start asking the seller about specific details. Some of them let you understand they really "don't know" (i.e. the camera is jammed), while others stick to their word with strength. And many surprises in the middle, sometimes for good, sometimes for bad.
