My beloved Olympus 35 RD needs a shade and i have several 49mm shades available, but only one that doesnt black out the rangefinder image almost totally.

Does anyone know if putting an original shade from SMC Pentax-FA 43mm f1.9 Limited in front of the F.Zuiko 1:1.7 f=40mm lens of the 35RD causes vignetting of the lens?

If you can find a Vivitar 49mm (screw-in) shade, it is shallower than many other shades for 40/50mm lenses.

Other than that, finding an original shade (which I believe has a cut-out for the viewfinder,) is the other option, but may be difficult. Look on e-bay UK as well as in the US/Canada.

I had a RD for a long time and I always used a step-up ring to 52mm.

Not sure what you mean Mablo, the FA43 has 49mm thread and is rising to 52mm in about 1,5cm-1,8cm approximatly.
The FA shade looks like made for it and doesnt show up that much in the finder.

Now that we're on it, would you like to join in on saturday (dont know if its rainy) at city centre to try out, it just i cant develop for a while and i wanted some info.

Here is what the original shade looks like. Coincidentally enough I found this in a junk shop today for $5. Luckily for me, there was still a camera attached to it...

Oh I'm sorry Jani I saw this only today (sunday). Incidentally we had a meeting yesterday at Vltava bar with some members of kameralaukku.com. The meeting takes place at the same place every 8th day of each month at 18:00. Next meeting is 8th of June. You are most welcome to join in. If you need some info about RD please send me a private message. I'll be glad to help. It's a great camera.
