A Subtle Touch Of Winter...

In the B.C. Lower Mainland we generally get relatively mild winters with little snow and temps nowhere near as cold as the Interior. This winter, in spite of dire predictions from the forecasters, has been pretty typical. We had a "colder" day today with very light on and off snow flurries. I had to run into town to get gas and noticed this dusting of snow on the headstones in a cemetery I pass quite often so I decided to stop and explore the possibilities. To me this image presents a dull, dreary winter scene while reminding we people of the Coast just how lucky we actually are...

Is there naturally that much light falloff in the corners when wide open or is that post-processing?

Nice tonality. The F on the headstone looks just like the Olympus Pen F!

Yes, I added a bit of vignetting to place a bit more emphasis on the headstone. I tend to get a bit carried away sometimes but I like the look, especially on shots that are already somewhat dark and somber...

I like your photo. I have done somehting the same here.

But there are other ways of conveying it too. In Australia not too many places get snow in winter-maybe a little extra cloud as here. Plus some nice green grass (in summer its brown.)

But maybe nothing conveys an Australian winter like a dreary deserted beach in monochrome

It apears that I've overdone it with the vignette--as I said, one of my vices. Folks here seem to prefer simplicity. Here's another from the same set "without" any vignetting. Thanks for all the comments...

There is nothing wrong with vignettes IMHO. But the best ones are a little subtle. If they are too obvious they tend to distract.

I have used a vignette effect here for example and while it may be obvious now that I have said this, its much less so without that knowledge as there is no obvious point where the vignette starts and ends. That I think is the secret.

(Not necessarily winter related though - although clearly the weather is cool judging by the clothing worn.
