A tale of 3 lenses - Planar, Sonnar and Summicron

I love shots 2 & 3 /planar & summicron

That particular 'sonnar' shot didn't remind me of its signature

Lovely work though ...Thanks !!

that would be lovely! i, for one, really appreciate those that go to the trouble to do things like this. i love looking at the various characteristics of a lens, particularly wide open. btw, is your Sonnar optimised for f/1.5 or f/2.8 (sorry if this has been stated elsewhere)?

It's optimized for 1.5... which was my primary intent for buying the lens... I happened to have had Tri-X @ 1600 loaded at the time I took the image, so, f1.5 would have overexposed it, plus the DOF would have been too shallow given that I was pretty close when I took the shot.

Also, IMO, the Summicron doesn't look bad, especially for an older lens -- this was a chrome Type I rigid, made from '56-'68. I just had it CLA'd by Steve at stevecamera.com, so that's another incentive to run tests this weekend.

Cheers!

Keith

thank you, Keith. interesting about the optimisation... i've got a used Sonnar coming to me which is an older one, but the price was good enough i can always have it changed to f/1.5. (i haven't gotten it yet and the suspense is killing me!) i love the draw of the Sonnar but there is something compelling about the Planar (sigh) as i'm looking for a more all-around lens to complement my pre-asph 50 Lux. speaking of the pre-asph, it has a very similar look to your Rigid Cron (mine is 63) -- which i quite like as well...

funnily enough, the lens that left me the most ambivalent was the one i'm getting  but i think that may have more to do with the image you've shown (and choice of aperture) rather than the actual lens. much as i prefer actual photographs (rather than test shots), in this instance i might be very interested... (arrrrgh! i'm turning into a total nerd. if only i had the money to keep up with my taste :bang: )
