To cut a long story short, I had the oportunity to get 4 silver Jupiter 8's for $6. The only trouble was that they were described as BAD, with dents, scratches, fungus and other maladies being cited. Any way for $6, it was worth getting them for a supply of screws, shims and with a bit of luck I could make one good one as well as getting some practice. They arrived today and it was a pleasant surprise in that they were not as bad as I thought although they were all different. With a bit of luck I should get at least 2 and perhaps 3 in a usable condition.

The lens are in the attached photo. The one on the left is identical to the black ones but this is the first one I have seen in silver. The focus helix was jammed solid and the depth of field markings are nearly fully worn away but otherwise it is quite good with good glass. The next one also had a jammed helix and is a type I haven't seen. It has a solid rear ring and appears to have a double helix like the J3. The filter threads are damaged and there are a few light cleaning marks but otherwise it appears sound. The last 2 are like the more usual J8's and are similar to the construction if the I16 and I61. The one with the focus tab is heavily corroded and has some internal fungus. The one without has a very small crack in the edge of the front element but is otherwise sound.

All are going to need a complete rebuild. Hopefully, I should get them done over the next week or so and I will take photos and give step by step instructions should anyone want to service theirs. There may be the odd delay as I get ferider's and fgianni's J9's for servicing.

This should be interesting and I'll keep a watch for your results. No matter what the results, you've gotten your $6 worth in parts, just as you've said. :)

Thanks Kim for taking the time and effort in this project. It will definately be a keeper and great help.

The J9 has 3 helix. The J3 and this one has 2. One to move the lens and the other to maintain the front of the lens stable. The other J8's use a pin like the Industars.
