Last night was my first evening off in about three weeks, so I hiked across the frozen lake to have a beer or three.
One of the other patrons was carrying a camera, I mainly noticed because he was carrying it with the strap over one shoulder and the camera facing inwards. I started a conversation with the owner about his camera. His first reply to me about the camera was, "Yep. It's taken a lot of pictures for me over the years." Greg is not into the photo gear, he bought the camera new in the late 50s and was in trouble with the wife for spending so much money. His defense was that the salesman told him "he wouldn't have to buy another camera. Ever." And he hasn't. He doesn't care much about the camera as an object beyond treating his tools well--it works so he doesn't think about it much.
Not the gear head that I am.
Until we started talking about fishing. Apparently I can't catch anything with the pole and bait and lures (and hooks, even!) I have been using up here for the last two years. I guess the fish I've caught were just taking pity on me for not having the right gear.

My wife has a saying: "buy it once and buy it well".

I have purchased three cameras since 2006 (one each DSLR, pocket digital and film RF), but when I bought them I used the old "honey, I was only doing what you suggested" excuse 😎.

Of course, any more gear at this point will be grounds for divorce....
