I am looking for a user condition M body. What is a "good price" these days for a not-so-great-looking-but-working M body? Shutter speeds should be accurate and viewfinder clear.

I am looking for any M model with a rangefinder. I also have seen here and there excellent asking prices for the M3.

Currently on pnet there is an m6 for $935.

This is too much for me right now. Maybe a meterless M body is less expensive in user shape.

I saw M3's starting at $599 at KEH. I just bought a beautiful M3 from this groups classifieds for $575. I am extremely happy with the condition and very excited about gearing up with some lenses. I won an auction for a 90 Elmar LTM chrome and expect to receive it in about a week.

There you go. This is a nice deal for you, John. The M3 is a beautiful camera indeed, with a very clear viewfinder. I wish I can find one at such a price.

I think that an M6 will be more expensive then let's say an M3 in the same condition. Maybe I am wrong here and the meter is unimportant.

sorry raid, i was not clear.
i'm wondering why you are looking for another body in the first place?
you seem to have many cameras already and seeing that you are not looking for a particular camera model i was wondering what the need for any m camera was at this moment in time.

I never see a decent offer from your sale either here or pnet. how low you want to go for M body? $270?

Joe: My M3 is like new and I want to keep it this way. It may not be practical, but if I can find a user body I would use that one more often.

Dan: I sometimes see offer for around $600 for an M3. I would not trust a very cheap M sale anyways. I'm not sure what you mean by "I never see a decent offer from your sale either here or pnet".

I bought my M3 for 400 Euro a few months ago with warrantee at a regular used-Leica dealer, it is so good I am considering having the top plate (meter-scuff marks) rechromed to make it as new.

Life is short, why just use your new M3? anyway your new M3 will be end up some where. I have seen lots of beater, all need repair job. end up pay more.

Raid, we all have our reasons for wanting to preserve our equipment, but in this case I think Dan is right--why baby your equipment so much that you cannot enjoy it yourself? When we are dead and gone our prized possessions may be treasured by our loved ones, they may end up in some future collector's shelf, or they may end up in the trash heap, one never knows.

I guess, both of you have a point here. I gave the issue some more thought last night, and now I am tyorn between another M3 body and between getting what i don't have; a body with a meter and rangefinder. Maybe a Bessa R/R2 would better fit my needs. I will give this more thought and decide. I have received several good offers via email and pm for M bodies.
Dan: referring to your earlier comment on offers, I want to say that I never bargaiin when buying equipment. I pay full price requested and have been doing so for many years. I hardly sell anything on PN or this website but have been selling in the past on ebay at very fair prices, quite often below market.

I'd be careful not to be penny-wise and pound-foolish. A so-called "beater" with a really low price could turn out to be more costly than something newer and in better shape. A $500 M3 that's working today and stops working next month will still be worth only $500 (due to cosmetics) even after a $300 overhaul, or worth $200 as a parts body. $900 for a working M6 with a few finish marks will probably not need major repairs before you're ready to sell it...for the same $900.

An clean M6 for <$1200 is a good deal.
