A word about the reliability of RFF

I would have liked to have seen this instead of a tiered membership. That way, only the people receiving money from a sale would be out a few dollars, and since many items sold here are in the high hundreds to low thousand range, it would add up fast and be painless.

I'm just afraid of what we all saw happen on photo.net- that someone posts an opposing viewpoint, and are immediately jumped on by some pompous contributor, and called "not worthy to comment" since they didn't contribute to the site.

I have an idea: how about a 1% (or 2%) sale pledge? Voluntary, of course.

Anybody who sells something on RFF for a given month, then gives 1% (or 2%) of the purchase to RFF. That may boost the sale, perhaps?

I consider my "subscription" to really just be a donation to help keep up the site.

I don't use the gallery - yet - but I totally agree and paid in that spirit. This site is a unique resource - and better far, a unique community. Let's do all we can to keep it so. I very much doubt that there will be any silly spats over who belongs or degrees of membership. This place is like a village: anyone who behaved in such foolish manner would immediately discredit themselves.

It's also worth remembering that, whilst for many people here $25 is no great matter, for others, in some parts of the world, it's a very great deal indeed.

A wave to everyone, Ian

After Jorge's first post last night I was curious how the inevitable "split" would arise.

I buy into Jorge's contention that this site is essentially a labor of love - not a money making enterprise.

Therefore, I see the request to contribute $25 as simply a web-based example of an old fashioned 19th century barnbuilding or a 1930's era Harlem rent party. You know, folks chipping in to help out.

The access issue is problemattic. It seems to be worst during US business hours. I don't think I've ever had a problem on weekends and most weeknights are okay too. So I think it behooves Jorge to seek a more robust server and I'm willing to help out the only way I really can - which is with a few dollars.

Jorge, it does sound a little like your host is holding you to ransome - just my view...

I wish you every success for the site - it has been a invaluable resource for me and I have learned a great deal in the past year that I have been a member of it, with other users who are by far the most polite, helpful and knowlegable of any other site I have regularly visited.

Please keep up the good work in the knowledge that most of us users fully support you and will help out in any way that we can.

That is so clearly right. Just think what Rupert Murdoch charges to watch his rotten television (at least £21.00 a month in the UK) and that blacks out at the first sign of rain!

I don't know whose meant to be doing the extortion, but it sure ain't Jorge.

Ian

Jorge - Might I suggest powervps.com? I am a moderator at another club, with more members, that post more, and we do not EVER have a problem with them or their servers.

Jorge, keep up the good work my friend. Who else is going to go to this amount of aggravation for free?! Right - no one. Solely because of this site I have re -discovered RF cameras and the joy in using them. You have my support and my subscription as of 30 minutes ago.
Do your best and apologize to no one.

Jorge, I don't think it's really that big a deal. It's like sometimes when I go to the City I get stuck in traffic and arrive later then expected. That may be frustrating at times but I don't sell my car and stay home, I just live with it. I would also like to say that I'm happy to support RFF. I think $25 a year is a great value for what is offered here. Like Joe says "keep the faith" Jim Gibson

clearly a sign of what a real web community is like.

If I had purchased a $25 photo book that gave me all the knowledge I've gained here, I'd regard that as the holy grail of photography books. I'll be contributing even though I won't need the extra features, just for the well-being of the site. Thanks Jorge!
