A Zest of Zenits

I wouldn't be interested in a "Zenit" mirrorless. To me, mirrorless cameras have all the character of chewing gum - apart from having to use reading glasses to see the back screen. Give me an optical viewfinder any day!

Dear John,

You can have both optical and electronic finders (Leica M or for that matter my ancient Minox 8111) and "mirrorless" doesn't necessarily mean using a screen on the back. The best eye-level EVFs (eg Olympus) are remarkably good, though they still have some way to go when it comes to camera or subject movement.

Cheers,

R.

Hi,

There's a useful chart showing Zenits etc here:-

http://www.zenitcamera.com/catalog/cameralist-eng.html

There's links where you see a small symbol; for example the flag show the link and language of the instruction manual and so on.

And to add some confusion, here's a picture of the almost identical Zenit and Zenit 3M.

If you look for an instruction manual on ebay for this model you'll find three but the main difference I could see was the cover...

Fresh rumor today on old idea to start digital Zenit production.
https://vz.ru/news/2017/8/18/883280.html In Russian.
Cameras locally made, imported electronics. Zenitsonystein. Price above iPhone.
There were similar rumors 10 (?) years or so ago. I think those were based on their SLR designs. I was sad to not see them become real production.
I found more specific info here:

A FF mirrorless camera by 2018 sounds like an ambitious goal
Interesting article! But what got my attention were the last seven words in the first paragraph: "[B and "a luxury camera" similar to Leica.][/B] That would be very interesting to see come to fruition!

I hope they make this work this time!

I have my dad's Zenit EM, and l still shoot with it sometimes, although the advance lever feels like the gears are a bit stripped since it does not work smoothly, and sometimes the mirror won't go up when depressing the shutter, even though it fires. The 'solution' is to tip the camera with the lens facing downwards, and then wind it gently. I've been thinking of getting another EM for parts, to repair my dad's camera, it would mean the world to him.

Yes but the advance lever seems as though it skips a geartooth until it advances smoothly and it repeats always at the same spot, so l thought it may be stripped somewhere.
