I'm thinking of possibly picking up an A7r, specifically for this lens. Anyone have much experience with this combo? I've been reading mixed reviews.
Corner sharpness isn't a concern wide open, but how are the corners stopped down?
I would also love to see a portrait, wide open at minimum focus distance if anyone has one.

The minority view is that the lens is great on the A7r. At about 2 meters, it is really good. But the majority opinion is the lens does not have the magic with the A7r, many disappointed lux owners.
However, the native FE 55 is considered the sharpest AF lens ever produced.
In fact the A7r is a camera for native glass IMHO. For all other mounts the A7 is better.

Why?
36mp is huge problem. It's a pain for the light, since the tiny things overflow at angle, it's a pain for storage, it's a pain for processing, and you will never see the difference looking at the whole image. Ever.
In fact with many many lenses, the 24mp A7 is far superior.
But I can't blame you since I fell for the numbers myself at first.

My main issue was nailing focus; my experience was that magnification was required, which slowed me down when compared to a rangefinder.

well that's a rather absolute stance on something that's completely subjective.
ps my computer is not a piece of **** and processing 36mp images is not an issue and Id be happy to process 100mp pictures.

My experience with the lens on the A7 is that corners are fairly sharp wide open. And I agree with what has been said above. If you want to play with adapted glass, get the non-r version. You get better handheld ability, faster continuous drive at the price of a bit of resolution loss.
I have however found myself reaching for the 35mm Summilux ASPH after I began using the A7. Maybe it's just me, but that lens (the FLE version) seems to draw better on the A7.

What I cannot find is the same lens shot on both these cameras using the same scene and settings to "prove" that the 7 really does suit some lenses "better" than the r. Anyone have a link?

Oh, because the kid in me wants mega mega megapix. haha.
I'm also considering the d800e, because I have 5 nikon lenses. But none of those lenses are as good as the 50 summilux, which can't be adapted to dslr.
I also enjoy some pixel peeping, cropping, and printing large…I have an epson 9600 that I fire up on occasion.

I use my 50 lux asph with an a7 and voigtlander close adapter it's a dream combo, super sharp at f 1.4 and focuses very close

I've got the pre-ASPH lux and the A7... it's ridiculously good so I would imagine the A7 or A7r (I think 36MP is overkill.. just my opinion though... I'm a people photographer
I don't need to crop that much and I know I'm not making 16x20 portraits
) with the ASPH lux would be slightly better. I will be getting the 55mm FE because that lens is wicked..

It's a great combo for me and it's either the 50mm or the 90mm for portraits.. both work very well imho on the A7

I have stitched files and 4x5 negative scans on the far side of 100 megapixels. I suppose I could also get at or above 100 megapixels with some 6x7 color negatives and positives.
What are you waiting for?

I tested the A7r with a 50mm 1.0 Noctilux and I was amazed by the picture quality and focus accuracy. Now one thing that may be needed in the Sony is Fuji's implementation of the new dual window focus method where on one side of the frame you see the whole image and on the other a magnified view. This would solve the problem of zooming in to get fcus right but loosing the shot because the "moment" is lost. This is why I posted my thread why I would like an XT-1 with the A7r sensor and guts . I just wish one of these companies would get it right for once. I guess I should not complain too much in that the A7r is revolutionary, but I am picky!

Sharp edges wide open are not always important to everyone. How many times have you shot a planar subject wide open and needed perfection?
I find the CV 35 1.2 II absolutely spectacular lens on the A7R, because it is sharp on centre wide open (but not in the corners), which is good for people work and almost perfect from corner to corner by f5.6.
If the 50 lux asph is the same, it might be great if you are not someone to shoot off centre subjects wide open.
