Early days, but I predict it will be better than any current stock A7x with RF wide angles. Of course the price is now more than a used M9!

Interesting. When mine arrives I will be doing some tests, although at the moment I don't have any highly symmetric M-mount lenses. IMO as long as it's not worse than the unmodified A7, corner performance for adapted lenses is a minor issue.
As for the price, it is a professional body with industry-leading specs. There's a premium for being on the edge of the technology curve...Once upon a time, if you wanted 40 megapixels the entry admission was a $8,000 pentax 645D.

Eventually, Sony will have an a7mk3 using a smaller mp version of that sensor. I can wait for it to come into my price range given Sony history of advancing bodies at a near yearly rate. Lately they seem to be slowing down some, but not by much.

I'm really impressed with the initial reviews. With this sensor the Sony A7r II is going to challenge and or arguably surpass every other full frame digital camera - at least until other cameras have the same sensor. Where is that Nikon D820?

Yeah, that is hard to swallow for a Sony that you know will depreciate quickly. Buy it in 2 years for $1500.

The whole raison d'être of this thing is 4K video. That's the only reason they built the sensor like this. But the side effects may be good LOL
The price: if they would just finish the camera properly it might be OK. i.e. a real battery, real weather proofing, general toughening, more polish on the controls, and more customization like being able to map a switch for EVF LCD swap, and better menu design. True RAWS would be nice.
I won't be getting one till they are used if ever, because I'm real happy with M9 and A7.mod combo. I don't care about 42mp and 4K, personally. But I love to see the innovation, however flawed the implementation.
The A7 series can produce very very nice stuff in the right hands with certain lenses. This rig should be better yet, and maybe, fingers crossed, it will shoot M, accidentally.

With my NEX-5N slowly dying, Sony may have built a worthy successor to it just in time: a Sony that is usable with M lenses right out of the box.

I have considered every single camera in the A7 family, and I was close to getting both the A7s and the A7II. The former was just too expensive for what it offers me and the latter is not suitable for the modification. The earliest cameras were not that great to use.

For what i know the a7 line works great with retrofocus lenses.

"The 35mm Summicron ASPH was the first Leica M lens I tried on the A7RII because it's corner performance was so bad on the A7II and A7R. Sadly I've not found much improvement in the smearing. In fact I didn't even develop the files, just viewed the magnified corners of the image in the viewfinder. On the A7RII the corners still show the odd effect of being diffuse one side of focus and a double image on the other side of focus. The best focus point still has significant smearing. This is so very different compared to the corner performance of the little 35/2.8 FE lens on the A7RII, there's just no comparison. Even stopped down the Summicron is no match for the FE lens at full aperture.

in fact the r2 shoots it better than the 246, which I could not believe, but seems the case.

So I have had a A7RII to test the last few days and I have been comparing it to a Pentax 645Z.
Initial test results are that the Sony is so darn close to the Pentax. I mean really so very darn close. The Sony/Zeiss 35mm f2.8 lens is stunning on it, and that combo compared to the 645Z and 75mm f2.8 FA lens is enough to make me tingle inside.
With the Sony it seems (last generation) medium format quality is truly within reach of mere mortals.

If you pick the few great lenses the camera knows, it's really good. That's one of them.
