About tray color

I have three different colored trays to use in my new "darkroom." Their colors are white, buff, and red. Is there any reason to assign a particular color to the developer, stop, or fixer?

They're probably Yankee Agitrays with little bumps on the bottom so if you push down on the edge you can agitate them. Any self respecting patriotic yankee would insist on red white and blue! Most of us used white for developer, red for stop, and blue for fix. After forty years one side of the developer tray is badly worn down from using the stainless steel print tongs to push down on the tray. The white tray is also badly discolored from silver soaking into the plastic.

MONEY SAVING TIP: If you only make a few prints and plan on printing again later that day, or even the next, don't dump the developer tray. What kills developer is mostly oxidation. Take your stop bath tray and float it on the developer. Now only a thin strip of developer is exposed to the air rather than the entire surface.
