This is mostly for the a7/r, but it could be more broadly interpreted for other digital bodies on which to mount rf glass. My question is simple: can you collapse lenses into these bodies?

Not for 5n. The baffle next to the sensor stops the lens from fully collapsing (Summicron collapsible & Industar 22)

It may depend on the lens - the f/2 Sonnar in Contax mount will not fully collapse on any APS-C Nex as far as I can make out. As the Contax shutter box is unusually cramped, smaller than a FF sensor, at least that one should collapse on the a7 unless Sony screwed up in some bizarre way. It is hard to tell whether any of the smaller (f/2.8 or slower) collapsibles would fit the small Nex'es - they could by glass size, but I suspect that everybody used a generic LTM or Contax mount width barrel (which would hit the APS size collar).

I met a guy here locally at one point who had a collapsible on his NEX (I think). He actually had it extended and stuck a piece of plastic tubing with a slit in it around the neck of the lens so it would not collapse and hit the internals or sensor. He just takes it off the camera and collapses for storage. I thought that the plastic tube/sleeve was a good idea. That's if you don't mind carrying it sticking out, if hitting internals is a worry.

A great question. I have a 5cm 3.5 red dial elmar coming which I know will not collapse into a 5n.
I wonder if it might on the A7r.
Would not like to find out the hard way it's can't

Great idea - better than the "dymo-tape fix" they used to recommend on the M5's

Exactly what I have done for Elmar M on Nex 6.
I don't think the lens will actually hit the sensor, just the surrounding covers.

Me too as I dont wish to take the chance of damaging a camera. I find that its too easy for collapsible lenses to twist while on the camera and unlock to the point where they can collapse - say when stored in a carry bag. By putting a piece of tape around the "throat" of the lens this prevents that occuring. At least the lens can still unlock but if it does it then cant collapse. I do this both for my M8 and for NEX/M43 cameras - no point risking it.

Not yet tried it but has anyone got some interesting examples from Summar on Nex?

In case anyone still wondering, 5cm f3.5 elmar LTM will not collapsed fully into Sony A7/r. There are about 1-2mm left. The shutter housing is still too thick. It won't damage the sensor.
However, if you really want a collapsible lens on the a7, industar 10 will collapsed completely into a7. Not all of them though, coz i have 2 industar 10 from different era that have different length. The older one that came with Fed 1 is as long as elmar and the one that came with Fed 2 is significantly shorter

my Perar 3.5/35 works fine on A7r.
