Adobe taking the p**s

If this is true it vindicates my decision to buy Corel Paintshop Pro. Am I reading this correctly that you must pay $50 per month to use PS - even if you have already bought the software license? What a crock! I would never waste my money on that.If I buy a car, do I have to pay General Motors or Mercedes $x per month to put petrol in it and drive it? What a load of sheit!

As I understand it, your software will continue to work just as it always has.

The difference is that if you want to move to newer versions, they want you to subscribe to a monthly 'rental' of software, rather than buy the new versions outright.

It won't affect existing software,so if you've already bought, nothing will change until you want to move to the next version.

I actually like the subscription model, I subscribed to Microsoft Office, which is a pretty good deal at $7.95 a month for 5 installs. However, to take away the option to buy outright seems a pretty dumb move by Adobe.

I just hate having to pay something monthly... it just complicates my finances.

I completely agree, I absolutely hate the idea of monthly payments. Whenever possible, I'd much rather purchase something and be done with it. This has me a little bummed out. I could probably deal with using CS6 for a long time, but if I buy a new digital camera will ACR not be able to support the RAW files?

I assume this is nothing other than a rather interesting attempt at circumventing online piracy.

Look where I live! I could have taken the "other" route and saved $1200 which is the rip-off cost to Asian customers. But no, "I'll play fair"........ Unlike Adobe eh!

As others have pointed out, it's future ACR upgrades that are going tobe an issue

G-I-M-P.......Won't take ya for a ride like Adobe will...

Speaking of software I had an eye opening moment the other day when my friend who designs sculptures for public art on his computer told me his CAD drawing program sells for a cool ten grand!

Adobe smart ass move has lost a lot of customers,
but not me for sure. It's all a crock.
For someone who sees no future in all these companies,
what with more and more phone cameras and slates,
who needs these photo-shops?
I use Picassa. I guess one day they will charge..
i will be gone. i am sick of continued update, improvements,
that go no further for my photography.
Yes i am a member of Flat Earth Society.
I use JPEGs, will not work with Raw.

Isn't possible for offline users of photoshop (such as CS6 users) to ask Adobe to make ACR upgrades compatible with older CS versions? I know that isn't the case, but there is no reason it can't be done.

How about using Adobe's DNG converter (it's free). I assume that it will be upgraded in the future, so future raw files could be used with older CS via DNG.

The monthly subscription cost for PS/CS7 is $20 based on an annual subscription. The $50 plan is for people that don't already own Adobe Creative Suite and want/need access to all the different CS programs. For those who already own CS3-CS6 the cost is $30 a month.

I'm not really educated on DNG, and to prevent this from offtracking the thread can anyone point me to a resource for to explain the process? I'm interested in learning if converting to DNG means that I have to carry around a second RAW (if I kept my Nikon NEFs for example) file and other more technical aspects of the workflow?

As an FYI - this impacts Photoshop and other CS (Creative Suite) items but NOT Lightroom (not that this endears people to Adobe but just thought I would clarify before someone threw out the Lightroom with the bathwater :D )

Cheers,
Dave

Adobe software is a de facto standard, like Office. Yes, you can do everything you need with gimp and other public tools, most people are not savvy enough, and even if they are most will prefer to have all they need in one package.

Adobe knows that their software is widely pirated because of its insane price, including by many who don't normally steal software. This is an attempt to take advantage of those with a conscience, by dragging the pain out month by month, with the clear goal of making even more money in the end. Sort of despicable, but they are a public corporation, so that's all you should expect.

Perhaps this will be the motivation to assemble a stable open source alternative to CS? Maybe there is already a kickstarter project?

Vote with your pocketbook and ditch them. There are plenty of great alternatives on the market. And, if you can't find an alternative that you like, then pony up the cash. Pretty simple.

Should I elect ( and I doubt I will) to subscribe to CC, this would seemingly be impossible as Adobe refuse to accept credit card transactions from Thailand. When recently purchasing CS6 I needed to source a local Adobe "partner" who in turn sourced the product from Singapore. Even then the local "partner" insisted on cash!

Looks like I'll be on CS6 forever!

What's the betting that Lightroom is next?

If you go to the Adobe website and try to purchase Photoshop CS6, the site keeps pushing you to buy the subscription "cloud" version.

Best,
-Tim
