ADOX is introducing a new film

Been a while since I shot ADOX..didn't realize CHS50 was discontinued. I didn't have good results, but only shot a few rolls souped in D76—didn't get a feel for it.

But agreed, any new film is a good sign, offsetting the loss of Fuji emulsions.

I'm curious though about the IR sensitivity that's touted. I can't really see any difference with the cold-mirror filter shots in the data sheet, and I don't know what increased sensitivity means for straight photography. The wording makes it sound as if it isn't a panchromatic film.

Well, guess that's it for me then, have to sell all my film gear.
 
Adox film is good.

I was using Silvermax a fair bit but have tapered off. Tapered off shooting film in general, but have no fear, its just a lull.

Only one roll of Silvermax left in the fridge. Wish it was a little less expensive, I would replenish now. Also wish it came in 120 (seems to be a common wish)

The new film definitely piques my interest. Good chance I'll try it. I miss super fine-grain films like Pan-X and Tech Pan. I have some Ilford PanF-50, but I seem to bad luck with that film.

This new film is noted for its IR possibility, but the spectral response curve suggests it barely extends into IR range, just barely.

Also, I'm getting the feeling that this film will give ISO 50 and "pictorial" tonality only if developed in the special dedicated HR50 developer. A strategy similar to Silvermax, but we know that Silvermax gives pretty darn good results with other developers. Same with this new film??? (I note that the characteristic curves were made using FX-39 developer...so not sure what to think of that...)
 
Takkun, I think you're OK on the vegan thing. The animals weren't killed specifically to make the gelatin, and for all we know they may have simply died from old age or from too much exposure to the latest news out of Washington :-]

Not a single animal is killed because of getting bones for making gelatin for film products!
The bones would otherwise just be thrown away.
But, much more important: The biggest source globally for bones for high-quality gelatin for photography is India. And these bones ar from cows which died a natural death (you know about the holy cows in India, there are dozens of millions of them). These bones are used because of their excellent quality. Photo gelatin must be of highest quality.
Therefore even as vegan you can use film and photo paper without betraying your principles.
Don't worry, be relaxed and enjoy classic photography.

P.S.: By the way, all computer products (including digital cameras) also do have film products inside: PCB (printed circuit board) films.
 
New films seems to be somewhat misleading, it's an old film in new clothes (Agfa Aviphot maybe). The speed boost technology whatever it is sounds a bit like pre flashing. Still great news. Congrats to Adox/Fotoimpex
 
Skiff, good to know, ha. I was only joking. I've been on a vegan diet for about 15 years, but it's food only. Nobody can take my wool socks or Brooks bicycle saddle from me. Interesting bit about india though!

Back to the program—

I think it was around 2012-3 or so that ADOX came out with CHS as a 'new' film stock, and I was very excited. It's hard to keep track of what's going on with European films and who is reviving what under which brands. It's kept me from straying too far from Neopan and TMAX, but we've already lost one of those.

Silvermax suggesting its own dedicated developer (not to mention price) put me way off but this one's worth a shot.

Silvermax works excellent in lots of different developers. You don't necessarily need to use Silvermax developer for this film. With Silvermax developer you can capture huge contrast ranges of up to 14 stops with this film. That is its special capability.
I've got excellent results with processing Silvermax in Adox Rodinal and Adox FX-39, by the way.
Other photographers are using other developers and are also absolutely fine with their results.

+1. I bought several bulk rolls of Silvermax when it was somewhat cheaper. It works out to approx 3 EUR per roll which I believe is a very fair price for such a great film...
 
Adox are listing the film speed as ISO 50 but 17° - is this a return to the days of different film speed standards? (Presumably that should be 18°?)
